I know there are different variations of SR20s, Turbo, non turbo, VVL, ones with FWD, AWD and RWD trannys. Although this question may have been covered before or somewhere else, is there a difference in the SR20 internals i.e. crank, rods etc? If so, what is it or what should I look out for?
I just recently picked up an '01 Sentra with an SR20 that will need to be rebuilt after I pull the motor. Also I already own two 240sx' (both completely stock with KA)
Putting in a JDM SR20DET would be nice but don't want to put that kind of money into a daily driver. I kinda would like to keep it N/A so I don't have to deal with turbo piping and wire harness. I can get a USDM SR20DE for just $450. My dad works for a dealership so free shipping. And if what you say is true about pricing, then I may just opt to that. Also, I don't know if you mean by cheaper includes having a machine shop do the work but I won't be doing that. If the block is in good condition I can just hone the cylinders and cut the ridges at the top of the cylinder with a ridge reamer. Both I can do myself.
I haven't pulled the motor out and torn into it yet so I don't even know if the block is good. All I know is that when it runs there is a nasty knock (more like a pound) from inside the block. After taking off the steel oil pan I felt up into it and also in the bottom of that pan I found metal shavings in there. I hope it's rod on crank or rod on piston grinding. Other than the noise it runs great, no missing or weak idle.

u should just put a jdm de and not have to worry about anything instead of having to rebuild and spend alot if its an 01 and has rod knock already that mean that the person who had it did not take care of it the only way u can kill a nissan motor that new is by not changing the oil basicly u should just get the jdm de it will save u alot of headaches and money
But how much would a JDM "DE" cost? How much different is that from a USDM "DE" as far as internals go, compression ratio and stuff like that?
I know i can get a USDM "DE" for only $450 with free shipping. From what my dad tells me it will basically be a long block. USDM or JDM regardless, it would be fun to have a spare motor to build after I build my 240. Cause then when I have the money I can rebuild the bad motor (depending on block condition) and make my "daily driver" a hard core daily driver.

Thanks for that link DMP316. I'll have to figure out exactly what kind of power my motor has once I tear it apart. I just got the motor out earlier tonight. Planning on ripping into it today. I looked at my rockers and I have roller rockers. From what I pick up in that thread is that if I have the dished pistons then technically I have a compression ration of 10.1. Please correct me if I'm wrong, keep in mind I read these things and usually post when I'm about to go to bed.
But if it is 10.1 then how much better do you get then that from the factory?? Remember, this is a 2001 SR20DE, from what I know, one of the last years Nissan brought it to the states.
Although I am a Nissan enthusiast I never got into the SR20 info, mainly RB info because of owning two 240sx'. Also, I'm not a huge fan of FWD but if this winter is anything like last winter, then I will consider this car a godsend regardless of HP. That is my main use of this car, so high HP is not a huge deal but like any car guy it is something I hope to have. My main priority is cost and just gettin' this car rollin'.
Thanks for any inputs, they are greatly appreciated.

Not a problem bro. Well hope to see some pics and updated on the build
Just swap the block if you get a JDM de, then sell the head. It would be way more work to use a whole highport or lowport motor unless you find a roller rocker, than it would be to just swap out the block.

jer, I don't quite understand what you are saying. Say I do get a jdm DE, are you saying use the USDM block on JDM head or vise versa?
I found my problem in the block yesterday. On the fourth piston, the rod bearing had spun and now the two halfs were fused into one.
I know everyone told me to get a JDM motor but for $500 I can get the same motor, same car and year, no shipping cost, and 50,000 miles on motor and have it here this week. Less of a hassle, it's just a daily driver and I'll have another motor if I plan on building this car some. Maybe after I build my '90 240sx I will build the "bad" motor with new internals and such and have a pretty killer daily driver.
I would post pics but first i gotta figure out how to.
