speedometer works, odometer sometimes, cruise sometimes, p0325 sometimes

if you couldn't guess from the title i'm having odometer problems.
[edit: thread should be p0500 not p0325. always get those backwards.]
started when i either pulled the cluster to replace a bulb or reset the trip odometer (both were done within a day of owning the car).

odometer would work for 5-10 miles at the start of trips then stop. tried reseating connectors on back. nope. took out cluster, steel wool on screws and terminal points on the back, no joy. works for 15 miles a trip now, but still no go. shutting the car off and restarting doesn't fix it immediately, but letting it sit for ~30 mins will make it work again.
tried to figure out if cruise works... sometimes yes sometimes no. there is no relation to whether the odometer is working or not... cruise either works for the entire trip or not at all. its totally independent of odometer function.
i get p0500 from time to time. speedo works fine 100% of the time so it's not the VSS itself.

suggestions? i bought some contact deox spray to try this weekend, i also plan to take apart the cluster and take a look at the odometer function... there's a small catch in the trip odometer when it rolls single digits, but it does not routinely hang at the catch. any other ideas?

bump... also if anyone knows the VSS signal (i assume its a linear voltage relative to speed) i might try to bench test my cluster...
