Okay heres a cool trick you might want to try to reduce/remove sheet metal on flat/semi flat non-structural panels. Keep in mind this is all theoretical, I have not attempted this.....

1) Buy: carbon fiber cloth, release agents, resin for CF, polishing wax, latex gloves, razor/x-acto blades, resin rollers, 2"masking tape, dremel.

2) Designate sheet metal to remove, in this case the roof of the car.

3) Start by cleaning the entire surface of the roof. Apply polishing compound and buff until the surface is super smooth. This job is best done by your wife/girlfriend in a bikini

4) Follow directions on applying relase agent (the buffing helps this out tons) and apply to the entire roof.

5) Mask off a "border" neatly on the roof with 2" Masking tape.

6) The fun part: Mix up the epoxy resin accoriding to the directions and amount of CF fabric you are using.

7) Lay CF fabric on the buffed, release coated, roof with 2"-3" over the edges. You could use two layers of CF but that just adds more weight right?

8) Throughly "wet" the CF with the epoxy resin, working it smooth so you have saturated the CF with resin going all the way to the taped border. Trim off excess CF

9) Let the resin cure. After its cured, you should have a nice neat light weight roof skin.

10) Pop this sucker off the roof. Remeber that masking tape you neatly applied to form a border? This becomes your guide to trim the hardened CF.

11) Now trim the CF with a dremel tool. (note: the airborne fibers are hazzardous, wear a dust mask)

12) With the newly trimmed roof skin, put back on the roof and outline the skin with a crayon, marker, pencil, razorblade, scribe or what ever you choose.

13) Use the 2" masking tape again and lay lay it down on this line, we want a 2" border going into the center of the roof.

14) This now becomes a guide for cutting away the roof sheet metal. Break out your sawzzall, dremel, tin snips, or impliment of choice and remove the sheet metal from the roof. Once all done, remove tape.

15) You now want to rough up the 2" border with sand paper, going down to the metal, get past the paint.

16) With your adhesive/fastener of choice (JB weld, epoxy, pop rivets) attach the skin over your newly created sun roof. Seal interior seam with silicone.

17) Viola' In 16 easy steps, You have just removed some more weight from your car. Im sure once perfected, you can apply this to trunk lids, doors, interior panels etc...etc..

18) If it leaks...you messed up on the wetting process...use more resin from the inside to seal holes...

Remeber this is just an idea....Good Luck....

I know I have been away for a bit, but I have had a little free time to work on my car. Last time it weighed 1989 with 1 stock seat, 5 gallons of gas and wipers, lights, door bars, sunroof and needing a cleaning.

I weighed it with no sunroof, no wipers, 2 gallons of gas, no door bars (which weigh 11 pounds each), and a good cleaning. Still with 1 stock seat but on stock size (185/60/14 tires).
Now it weighs 1893, which is a far cry from 2594.

I might be able to get a friend to get some Brand New Hawker Genesis G13EP in for wholesale price. I just want to see how many people will be interested in buying these for $50. Shipping will be $10. Local pickup in Bay Area preferred.

This thing is powerful enough to start V8s. Dynabatt makes a rebadged version of the 14lb G16-EP and retails for $130 which is heavier than the G13-EP. The best price you can find for the G16-EP and G13-EP is $70 before shipping at www.gotbatteries.com. This is much more bang for the buck weightsaving/money wise compared to carbon fiber hoods which goes for $500+. But you guys already know this if you read the entire thread.

I just weighed all the crap i took out. No biggie but i saved 106lbs just by taking basic things out. Heres the list:

Replace Stock hood with CF Hood= 25.lbs
Passenger Seat= 33.lbs
Rear Seats= 10.5 lbs
Winsheild washer fluid box(Cant use sprayers w/ cf hood anyway)=10.lbs
Spare tire, jack and tools= 28.lbs
Total weight reduction= 106.5 pounds

Not much considering what the figster and other do, but if you ever sell your car down the road, you can always put these things back.

Also i took the middle seat belt out because i would never have 5 people in the car ever, but it didnt make a big diffrence ( 1.5 pounds)
Also you have to take the bumper off to remove the washer box, and the water inside it weighed the most so just squirt it all out if need be.

I will continue to search for basic things to take out for people who dont wanto go all out crazy!

Hey everybody, nice to see this post is still alive and well!
Stuff I've done lately...replaced stock drivers seat with Corbeau Forza the Corbeau weighs in at 16 lbs...I've taken more tar out...I know, I have been working on it forever, I just hate chiseling that stuff off...I removed the rear wiper/motor theres like 4 lbs or so.

Next up the door panels are gonna goabout 20 total is the impression I get... the AC and passanger side fan are gonna go, that should be almost 40 right guys? I'm taking out all the windsheild washer fluid crap(10 lbs?) (even though I had a idea about filling the box with mountain dew, and routing the tubes into...nevermind). I'm gonna remove the stupid little things on the strut tower that hold the trim peace on, thats only like .25lbs but will clean it up and help it to stop ripping my shirts that I throw in the back... AND finally going to do a batterry, not sure what kind yet, but I want to get one from a local place, anybody reccomend a cheap easily findable light ass battery? That may be able to shave about 25 more lbs off. That would be another 95 LBS! That would be sweet ass sweet! Oh then add the like 12 lbs from gutting the hood and it comes out to 107 lbs!

I sold the resonators I had for a side exit, but I'm thinking about doing it again...how much would that shave figgy? I'm too lazy to go find it in this post...

I'm hoping I can get 2200 on my daily driver...I'd be happy with that...for a while...

Pics are coming as soon as I get duplicolor to spray the patches of grey left by tar removal.

Josh

ok got a few new ones, remove horns, and in the trunk there is a metal brace on the right hand side that does nothing but support the muffler hanger bolts.i prized it up with an air chizzel and put lighter bolts back in.also there are numerous metal panels, pieces, and things i just cant take out so i get the trusty drill out and lighten em up a bit just make sure to retrive all the shavings.

Well guys...I ADDED weight to my car...like 5 lbs, but it helps make my car look a little better....

I put 4 panels back into the back of my car, and I'm spraying the floor black, so it all blends and looks normal. I'm pretty happy with it, seeing as I dont cringe everytime I look in the back of my car hahaha
