Originally posted by Low612 I agree on the se-r stock ratio with you. My car is driven 100 miles a day roundtrip 5 days a week . Its the higher revs in 5th gear i want to change. When up there its just hard to avoid having fun It will conserve a little gas as well.
What rpms are you at with your g20t tranny @70-75mph
Larry,
You can order the gearset so you can retain the stock 5th gear, thats how my set is, I am proably going to go to full dog later though. I kept the stock 5th so the whine would not bug me on the freeway but now I know that the whine is really not that bad.
I thought 5th gear was really weak also Mike. IIRC, Mike Mager blew up 5th gear on the freeway with a simple 15 psi roll on. I would do them all just to be safe.
If we can get this deal down to 2K for the full dog set, then I may just have to dust off the old Capital One card.

Im with Larry as far as the G20t ratio....would there be a way to at least change the 5th gear? If so, this would be right up my alley..especially if we get 10 or more buyers....
***also would cryo treating these gears make them even stronger or are they already cryoed by PAR??

Ivan Tomic wrote this to someone down under on another forum regarding the GTi-R gearset:
Quote:
The 1st GTi-R synchro gearset that was being designed was going to be rated at 450hp. PAR tried a new tooth profile (read: extra thick) with the WRX synchro gearset and showed me the WRX gearset. I straight away said i wanted that tooth profile for the GTi-R synchro gearset also. It took a while to complete the design of the GTi-R synchro gearset with the large tooth profile (especially on 2nd gear), but it did happen. The first batch of GTi-R synchro gearsets (including yours) has a large tooth profile on 1st (same as on the 1/2 dog) and is similar in thickness as to the 1/2 dog. 2nd gear has a massive tooth profile on the synchro gearset to give it the strength and this is what has increased the hp rating as the 1st design had a smaller tooth profile (but i liked the larger tooth profile for extra strength). 3rd has a large tooth profile which i trialled in my 1/2 dog gearset and is the same gear that is used in the synchro gearset. 4th gear is also a large tooth profile and the synchro gearset uses the same as whats used in the 1/2 dog gearset. An uprated 5th gear has also got a large tooth profile but uprated 5th is not really needed.
One of the only downsides (if you call it a downside) is that with large tooth profiles there is a little extra gear whine noise compared to a standard gearset, but this downside will outweigh the upside of having a very strong gearset.
Synchro rated to 600hp.
1/2 dog rated to 650hp.
He also posted some pics of 2nd gear he spoke about above:
That thing is HUGE! Massive teeth! I don't know about you guys but since PAR has not YET designed a synchro gearset for the FWD SR20, why can't we ask for the same thing (larger tooth profile) as Ivan did above? I'd certainly opt for the new stronger synchro design...wouldn't you? Seriously, why don't we find out?
Guys...I don't want to be a pain, but lets be serious here. I'm sure the guys at PAR know exactly what they're doing as far as gearsets are concerned. I mean how much more do you guys want!!! Is 450hp at the wheels not enough??? All this talk about cyroing and shotpeening is probably ridiculus. Some of you guys aren't making anywhere near that amount of power. I want to keep the prices as low as possible. This design will be brand new so I have no idea what the teeth are going to look like...seeing as how they're not made yet. We WILL be the "guinea pigs" of this new gearset.
But, just to humor you guys...I will forward the question onto PAR and see what they say.

At the end of summer, I think I will be interested. I have to work and get some hours in so I will have the bank account to back up my performance parts buying. What is the time span on this?

Here is the answer from PAR:
"In our designing we incorporate the biggest tooth profile present, with full consideration of efficiency. No good making a big overcorrected tooth if it causes to much separating forces which are passed onto the housing. In regards to ratios, as we said they are very similar to standard and if we were to make 5th a taller ratio, that is no drama."
For those that don't know here are the two different gear ratios for the FWD SR20.

Let's start compiling a list of those that are really interested in getting in on this deal. Once there is a set # of people, I can get a more accurate price with shipping. Please remember that only half is going to be due for the deposit...the balance gets paid before they ship out.
I think the "Group Buy" price will end June 14th or 21st. If we wait too long, then we won't have gears until December!!!
For those that want the full dog set, please speak up.
If everyone commits, then that is over the 10 people required to get the gears for $2000. Guys, this is a steal!!!
I am also working to get some deals on the NISMO Clutch-type LSD and various tranny work: such as cryotreating, case welding, gear install, and shotpeening.
Alright, you got me, I would be in for the dog gear set. It would be 2300 if we get 10 people or so right? I can have the grand by June 21st no problem and the split up of the payments is great. Gives me plenty of time to do it. If I can't get the funds I will do the synchro set instead.
Half will be due before the group buy ends. The remainder is to be paid in full before your gears ship.
Example: If the gears go for a final price of $2000, then you need to come up with $1000 before the end date (TBA). You then wait approx 6-8 weeks for your unit to be ready to ship. You will then pay the balance in full. At this time, you will be able to specify any additions (cryo, shotpeening, etc...) and pay for those options (if requested).
The list has been updated accordingly.
For those interested in the FULL DOG box, then add approx $350 to the final price. I will get an exact price for those that want the dog box once I get a confirmed number of people.
I am in on the group buy. I talked to our local Nissan expert Jay Whitley and he says this is worth it. Although my turbo project will not begin until next year, I am gathering up the parts to go turbo in 2004.
Blackb13, please send me a private message or e-mail at eramire1@tampabay.rr.com for details on when you need the cash.
I know you posted tentive times when you need half the cash then the other half but when you get more solid info just let me know. I guess now we are waiting on the rest of the others on the group buy.
Thanks for putting this together,
SE-R Newbie

Holy smokes, that makes like 9 solid people in on this group buy. That is amazing. Are we still looking at the 3rd week of June for the first payment? I hope so.
This includes all 5 gears in stock SE-R ratio if you individually want them right? (not just 1-4 but 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th)
What EXACTLY does this include parts wise? Is it:
1. Input Shaft (because gears on this shaft are one with the shaft)
2. All gears to slide onto an existing main shaft
Or
Both shafts with new parts and gears ready to throw in the case?
If it's the first scenario above then I would highly recommend every buying to brass synchro (aka baulk rings) while your in there for all the gears. They run anywhere from $25 to $45 depending on which gear and there of course are 5 of them to buy. I say this because there's not much point of having a brand new set of gears with used synchros just to prematurely wear out the new gears.
The synchro set will be 1-4 straight cut gears. Then 5th will be helical to bring the noise level down. All gears can be custom ratio, but leave 1st and 4th the same. They will be brand new synchros as far as I know.
