my classic se-r

So, I found this on craiglist. I think someone "in the know" looked at it, as the owner said someone "very knowledgeable" checked it out. The "inspector" pointed out some problems and mentioned about the forums and the such. Sorry if I stole it, but this one fit the bill perfectly. I couldn't NOT buy it.

------the ad------
1992 NISSAN SENTRA SER - Best Reasonable Offer
5 Speed Manual Transmission 2.0 Engine 4 Cylinder
147,100 Miles ORIGINAL OWNER
-Inspection good until 8/2006
-Repairs Done (have paperwork):
-Front Axles - 7/2002
-Brakes, Calipers, Rotors, Links, Pins & Bushings - 9/2002
-New Battery - 4/2003
-4 New Tires - 8/2004
-Last Oil Change - 9/2005 @ 145,392 miles

Repairs Needed:
Muffler
Starter -(will start but sporatically)
Blower Fan - (Interior fan will not work without the relay fan being replaced so currently there is no heat or a/c working)
Radio - (doesn't work well but the speakers are in working condition)

Car ran well until starter problem arose. There is no engine or clutch problems. Body has a small dent on driver side at wheel well and there is some rusting on driver side rear wheel well.

Great car for someone who is mechanically inclined or knows someone that is. Also, good for someone who needs parts.
$600 or Best Reasonable Offer
--------end ad------
That was the ad from craigslist. The owner was very upfront and answered all questions I had (consistently even (I tested him)). He was an older gent, so it's not babied, but not beat to death either. I haven't really gone under the car hardcore yet. Just drove it home to PA yesterday (~90miles) and it was a CHAMP! Engine, clutch, tranny all seemed to be in good shape. The interior was in really good shape. Cleaned thoroughly or just clean to begin with.

Issues:
-It does have a pretty bad exhaust leak. I think the flex pipe is disintegrating.....i'm a RICER!! (it's loud...ha ha)
-Brakes were not unsafe, but I'll have to address them.
-HVAC Blower fan - it's really the switch. He described the typical losing 1-3, but then 4 finally cut out on him also.
-Radio - I'll probably replace much of that subsystem anyway (just for clear tunes, nothing ginormous. Helps to have a hookup there.
-The starter is going and it was the owner's daily driver until this came up. Couldn't be stranded in the early AM. It started up everytime I turned the key, but I'll be preventive here.
-Owner caulked the crap out of the seals/window trims. I think they were leaking. On the plus side, it seemed effective in preventing any rust/water penetration in those spots. The trunk doesn't leak. No moonroof to worry about.
-Light rust on the rocker panels and over the driver's rear wheel arch and a door jamb. Not terrible.
-a couple dings, scratches. The drivers front fender looks like it'll push out with some persuasion.
-typical cracked foglight(s) and the pside headlight is yellowed (dside was replaced after minor fender bender).

All in all, I couldn't pass it up. Should be just some light bulbs, the starter and the exhaust for me to get her on the road. Of course I'll do all the fluids and have it looked over more thoroughly. I'm pretty stoked ***. Between the caulking and dings and scratches. I might just fully prep the car for a repaint.....we'll see what the budget is like and what else comes up. Does someone know the paint code/color name? For some reason I thought they called it Super Black. The car also shakes like mad when it's sitting at idle. Thinking it's a combination of the exhaust and bad motor/tranny mounts. I'm sure they're toast on this 13 y.o. car.

so the plans for now are just for refurbing
engine oil (GTX?)
filter
air filter
fuel filter
plugs (recommendations?)
coolant
tranny fluid
bulbs bulbs bulbs
interior/exterior cleaning
general inspection
fix/stop body rusting
belts

I contributed to the forum (1 yr) and grabbed the service manuals...that should come in HANDY. I'm just excited that I finally managed to score me my SE-R and it's black to boot!! ...After letting my last one go unceremoniously (91 black w/ moonroof - engine). Just in time for the convention which is fairly close by!!

Happy to be here
-Wylie

kewl....really hope there's no hard feelings. I'm not sure if the owner gave you a chance to counter offer. I just wanted something I could play with and keep my 9-2X stock/new. A Classic SE-R was exactly what I wanted. The fact that it was black was even better. I COULDN'T resist. lol It's come to a good home....for sure.

Was there anything else that you saw by going over it? I'm pretty sure I have the major things listed.

Thanks,
Wylie

Trust me, no hard feelings. I was the first person there with cash in my pocket. And would have drove it home that day if I wanted to pay what he was asking for it. I made him an offer on what I felt it was worth, and wouldn't pay any more then that.

Hmmm, lets see. The rust is pretty significant, it's not just surface rust. The drivers rocker being the worst, and the jambs were getting pretty bad too. Probably going to need a whole catback and a complete downpipe. It sounded closer to the head then the flex. The front brakes like you said werent good, actually, they need to be done right away. Full tune up, starter, blower motor resistor etc etc.

so the plans for now are just for refurbing
engine oil (GTX?) GTX is good at cleaning gunk out. but watch out! sometimes putting a high detergent oil can do bad things to seals and the like and make any gunk that was cloging up possible leak points thus making it leak.....the plus side? you know you need to address those areas with a new gasket/RTV <if you have the time of course and im guessing this isnt your daily? so you wont be in a huge hard spot. go to www.bobistheoilguy.com for more info on oils....i lovvvvve mobil 1.

filter - pure 1 hands down the best filter.

air filter- just replace with a cheapy stock paper filter till you go CAI

fuel filter- nissan OEM 300ZX TT

plugs (recommendations?) - NGK i forget the number *** do a search for that one

coolant- you could do a rad flush but again the whole "leaks" issue....i think its worth it ***. then use some good 50/50 and a bottle of redline water wetter.

tranny fluid- redline medium shock proof. it will turn any notchy ness into butter.

bulbs bulbs bulbs- as cheap as you can find um

interior/exterior cleaning- i would kill for a pro job...if you can afford it go that way!

general inspection

fix/stop body rusting- sanding/rust dissolver and some anti seize are a simple quick fix but sooner or later your gona want to cut it out and patch it up.

belts- get good stuff I.E. OEM from greg v.

when i got my car i used mobil 1 the next day. ran it threw and drove it hard then changed it again. i swaped my valve cover with one i painted wrinkle black a few weeks later and it was CLEAN, only the brown tinge of synth oil.

Yeah, it's gonna take some work....but, that's sorta the whole point behind me getting it. I didn't feel like modding the saab/subaru chassis again, as I'd already done it with the subaru AND undone it (3 years in, 3 days out). I've never done body work before....
Pulled out pretty much the whole interior today. Pulled up the carpet to do some inspections...nothing major underneath. A few light areas of surface oxidation/rust that just rubbed off. Probably coulda hit them with some rustoleum primer, but...didn't. All the carpets cleaned up easily, just lightly soiled, but not worn. The seats were just dirty, all vacuumed off easily also. I'll be able to tell tomorrow if the passenger's seat got clean enough for y'all. Not too much wear in the whole interior...a few scuff marks here and there, but pretty good for a 14 y.o. car. I did pull the headliner to work on giving it a fresh one.
Exhaust...i'm trying to get on the list for the SS Autochrome Header GB. Hopefully my cat still 'works' then if there's a problem with the muffler, I'll probably do an "a-la-GRM" and do a semi-custom catback. Definitely need to get the motor/tranny mounts, it' s a teeth rattler. Tomorrow is finish cleaning the interior and putting it back in, valve cover gasket, underbody/brakes inspection, maybe plugs, and fluid exchange-o'-rama!!! I'll throw pics up on Sunday...

hey Bob. It's got a fairly major exhaust leak and not inspected for PA yet. I don't know how much I'll be able to get done today (I've got a lot of help, so it might be a substantial chunk). I'll be sure to bring it up once it's a little, uh.....MORE reliable. If I make it to the RR, it'll probably be in the 9-2, but I'll bring lots of pics!
