Just got back from pulling my stock shifter out and cutting 1.62" out of the shaft. It looks and feels sooo much better! Between cutting it and putting in the ES bushing, my shifts have never felt better!
I tried to make it a true short shifter by moving the pivot ball up the shaft, but I couldn't get my hands on a heat gun and all of the other methods my friend and I tried (rubber mallet, really hot halogen lamp, cutting torch) didn't work at all.
(I'll be posting pics as soon as the upload image applet starts working again... )
Go get a timing light. You CAN damage the engine over time if the timing is too far advanced.
Got one and fixed my timing: I was right around 19*! 10-12 is stock, and 15* is what I've read as being the max. safe for a GA running 92 gas! Yikes! Hopefully my baby will love me more now & forgive me for effin' up her timing all these years...
Actually man, mine is at about 17 on 91 octane. I had my friend advance it until it pinged then back it of until it didn't. I might be getting rid of the GA16 VERY soon man, you want it call me, you have my number.

***'s right! My GA's survived 132xxx miles without a single oil leak, rough idle, or any such problem (knock on wood). I've heard these things are damn near bulletproof So while you guys' SR20's will be blowin' my doors off & just plain overpowering me, my lil' GA will probably be happily purring away to and putting a smile on my face for another 70xxx+ miles! (Knock on wood, again )
(Sorry to hear your's is pissin you off, though... )
Yeah, acually the GA weighs more than the SR due to it's tremendously heavy cast iron block. Trust me. When I took out my GAy16 with my engine hoist I thought I was caught on something. I am used to pulling out and putting in SRs which don't weigh much. I can respect someone trying to go for the GA16 power. But, really doesn't cost much to do an SR swap. Check out my project man.

UPDATE
Well, I got my new (to me) SE-R cluster in my car, and everything but the tach works. <sigh> I didn't realize at the onset that since my lil' E came sans tach, that when the time came for me to swap out my clusters, I'd be one tach wire short. But hopefully that'll be all fixed tomorrow!
w00t!! SE-R cluster is in and everything works! Tach, temp gauge, speedo, annunciator lights, everything! It's so cool having a lil' needle bouncing up & down in tune w/my engine

wanna give a little more insight on as to how you went about doing it? mines been sitting in the garage for monnnnnths. im afraid to cut wires :
Yea actually it does... It can put out more then the stock SR20DE does.
You are correct, sir.
SCC Magazine. Dave Coleman ain't no liar. They built up a GA16 in a...B14? I think. Got a big ol' flat torque curve, and got the WHP and torque above a stock SR20DE mill. With only bolt-ons (including cams IIRC).
Don't make me be diggin' up my back issue SCC articles now. Other folks must remember that project car.

I actually didn't have to cut any wires! After doing a little searching, I found this page that showed me how to get the wires, leads & all, out of the harnesses so you can swap 'em around w/o having to cut & splice!!
I'm not too sure if it'll help, but I put up a scan of the harness pin-out I drew up when swapping my clusers. Lemme know if it needs any clarification (which I'm sure it will)!
I love getting parts delivered; it's like Christmas! UPS just dropped off my AGX/Ground Control strut & spring setup (thanks SeRboostSr20!) and my Magnaflow XL muffler! I got my nismo shifter knob on today (thanks XxToKeSxX!!) and the suspension pieces, UR pulley, and solid shifter bracket are all going on tonight and I'm just waiting to figure out exactly what mandrel bends I'll need to order to make my own cat-back!
Going in tonight:
