Sr20 powered Starlet

Thought id share my project with you guys

1984 Toyota Starlet

Out with the mighty 4k(1300cc of pushrod 8 valve fury)

I got a sr20de+5speed from an s13

Engine as i purchased it

Now the sr20 is alot bigger than the 4k and requierd a bit of thinking an modifying to fit it in

Test fit

here its sitting very high as the stock angine mounts are in the way.
I ended up moving the engine back quite far which involved cutting a bit of firewall and gearbox tunnel

Starlet gearbox(K50) and silvia gearbox

sr20 clutch plate is the same size as the 4k flywheel lol

Went to get a ceramic clutch and found the engine has a det flywheel.
So i got a 6 button ceramic sprung center with a heavy duty pressure plate

engine mounts tacked up

engine sitting in final position. the bonnet doesnt close anymore so ill have to mod it

crossmember all welded an painted

honda hrv radiator mounted on an angle as there is no room behind the bonnet crosmember

got some bigger brakes and struts off a toyota cressida

because the struts are bigger i now have positive camber. Im making custom control arms to solve this

bosch 910 fuel pump

link lem G3 ecu. this is made in new zealand and is a great little unit. its Map sensored so no stupid afm(maf to you guys). can handle up to ~22psi boost.
the best thing about this ecu is its got usb onboard and has great software. also it has digital trigger decoding so one ecu can run reluctor, hall effect or optical cas without needing sub boards.

This car s being built as a gravel rally car so is getting a cage and harnesses etc.
cool thing about new zealand modifying laws is that we can do just about anything to our cars and also have very lax emissions. we dont need catylitic converters or anything. infact its common to remove them on cars that came with them factory.

yea 4 doors are very common here. its quite hard and expensive to get a 3dr.
plus mines facelift(the shape before they went ghey frontwheel drive) so has a longer wheelbase = better slides( or drifts or wateva)

nah the starlet is different. quite a few cars of that era looked like that.
a very simaler car was the 70's mazda 323

will defnitly get some good vids up when its going. im aiming for june but it may take longer.

More progress:

Installed bucket seats on custom rails. The drivers can slide back and forward but the passengers is fixed. i did this to get it lower and further back for weight dist.

Had to mod the hand brake to clear the gear lever. it doesnt lock automaticly anymore which is good for racing. now to lock it i push the catch in by hand. also put the gear lever in backwards to fit better(its in second in the pic)

As there is no room in the engine bay and because the car had a cable clutch i welded in a plate to hold the clutch master(AE86) inside the car

You can also see the stock brake line running behind the engine which im pleased is still able to fit. The exhaust points into the car at the moment so i'll have to cut even more firewall out.

Nah no solid mounts. the gearbox mount will be polyurethane.
Im just cutting it all out till its clears properly, then welding it all up again.

Im doing pretty much all the work myself which has saved me alot of money.

i went to look at a fully prepped race starlet today to get ideas on suspension...
man this guy has some crazy custom stuff on. looks like i had no idea what i was getting into when i started this project. oh well im too far through now to stop lol

Tack welded in a new bracket to hold the carina control arms in as they are wider than the starlet ones

Now i have positive camber again
Although now the wheel sticks out heaps.

I going to get a boss machined up to hold the sway bar and then position it so i have the desired castor and then weld it to the control arm

Like for the body work?
I plan to weld on larger flares to cover the wheels.
Ill need to do this at the back too as i will be putting in a stronger diff that is wider.

Its also getting a roll cage and lotsa seam welding and gussets to strengthen the whole lot. With the extra wieght and power plus being subjected to harsh driving in rally i dont want things being ripped apart
