Moving to NC this summer

Soon I will be moving to NC from NY. I was wondering how it is down there?
I would be moving towards the direction of UNC Char. area I think. But not for sure yet. Anyhow, how is the traffic down there? Is there a lot of auto-xing action? How is the import scene down there? I have live in upstate Ny my whole life so I never moved to a new state. Are there a lot of Nascar hicks there? Anyhow, I will be visiting there soon. But regardless I have to move. My girl is moving down there for a job and I am sick of working in this crappy upstate job market getting lousy pay...I know the job market in NC is a lot better than up here since i get job offers from down there anyhow. Any info would be great. Since the only person I know down there goes to UNC Charlotte and he has only lived there for a year.

i'm not sure about the charlotte area specifically, but nc in general is a great place to live. the other nc'ers will vouch for this once they see it. i actually think there's a couple people on the form that live in charlotte; i know at least one does. the traffic around there can get bad.....but not sure if it's as constant as in NY (going on what i've been through in NY). there's going to be nascar hicks all throughout the southeast, you'll have to get used to them. another thing...get used to the dialect. all northerners and southerners will always think the other one sounds wierd, and they do.
(the last part was only if you've never gone from north to south, or south to north)

good luck

Well, I think a lot of upstate Nyers sound odd too. I also live in a hickish part of NY. I hate nascar though...I hate stickers on GM cars, which is also up here....but I really hate nascar taking over speedvision.....sniff sniff. I am so sick of snow and snow plow taking chunks out of the roads here...and coldness. God I hate that. Being able to go running year round is nice too. Thanks for the info...any more is much appreciated. Every source in NY has said they hated NC...but then again..they moved to NY. OH!!! SOmeone said something about Charlotte having RED CLAY all over...and it gets into and onto everything. Is this true or were they just trying to scare me...the thought of my se-r with red fade scares me.

Sweet. Then I guess I have nothing to worry about...still no one said anything about the red clay. What the hell is that about? Is there really Red Clay everywheres? Anyhow, thanks for all the info...how is the night life there? Even though I dont really go out that much...but it would be nice to know. My se-r is N/A so I wont need that much room.

Charlotte is the largest city in NC ~1 million+ people (including the surrounding suburbs). So if you can't find some trouble to get into there, you must be dead.

Autocrossing: Excellent. There's 4 clubs in the state: Tarheel SCC (Raleigh/eastern NC), Triad SCC(Greensboro/Winston-Salem), Highlands SCC (Asheville), and Central Carolinas Region of the SCCA (Charlotte)

Track schools:
You'll be extremely close to Charlotte Motor Speedway (yes, they have a road course and occasionally they have driving schools there. NASA-VA will be there at least once this year). Carolina Motorsports Park is ~ an hour away in Kershaw, SC. You're ~2ish hours from VIR (the BEST f@#$king track on the planet!!), about 5ish hours from both Roebling Road in Savannah and Summit Point, WV. Probably ~2hrs from Road Atlanta.

Good place to be if you're into motorsports.

Red clay? Hell yes we got it. Western NC is eat up with it. You'll be in Charlotte. Welcome to Red Clay country. Seriously. I think there's even a county named "Clay" (might be a persons name though, I dunno...)

Just don't step in it when it's wet, that's all.

LOL....

The only thing bad about red-clay is trying to dig in it. It is not flying arouond in the air down here. About the biggest pain we have is pollen and especially now.

I live in Kannapolis wich is about 10 minutes from Charlotte and you guys thing that the race is a pain for YOU!!! Try being a Concord Police Officer and having to deal with all those red-necks.

its amazing how diverse charlotte is.. i have a friend that moved from new york to charlotte and feels totally out of place because he moved to a pick-up driving suburb.

Matt is right.. the motorsport scene isnt so bad. you have alot to look forward too.

As for the red clay... we have grass too ya know

my girl is down there looking at elementary schools for her to teach at. She says the clay is everywhere but the weather is sweet. Sort of cold today however. She said she sees a lot of car "mod" places, as she calls it. SHe said the education budget isnt like New Yorks and that NC is a little behind in educational programs. So she doesnt like that. And she said NC lacks the road size to handle traffic at rushhour. Lots of lights and 45 mph roads instead of expressways. That was all she had bad to say about it. The weather is good and she said that people from NYC would not like it down there but I am into cars and a slower paced area. Well, I guess I will see. I will be down there sooner than later if I dont land this job in the state this thursday. Otherwise I have to stay at my sh*tty job I have now....oh god. You think NC is hick...try Hudson NY. More frizzy haired 80's outfit wearing women at my work than a Molly Ringwald sweet 16 flick. Bluuaagh.
ANd again thanks for all the info.

That's an understatement. Our schools aren't renked 49th in the country for nothing. Forget crossing the boarder into SC thinking they're better. Guess who's #50...

We need a lottery for education, but the damn NC Republicans just simply refuse to even talk about it. Virginia has a lottery. Virginia was just named the 4th best state in the county to live. Coincidence? I think not.

Also true. Somehow, we call ourselves the "Good Road State". We'll at least for the most part the roads are in good shape, pothole-wise.

Well, after a week an NC my girl only would consider moving to NC for 1 Position in 1 school. But she speaks Spanish fluently so there is a real good chance she may get an offer. She said that everything she has leared in this progressive education program she graduated from contradicts with what she said the philosophies of the idividual schools she visited in NC were all about(except that one school). I was thinking Virginia may be a nicer alternative. However, NC has a thriving banking and financial sector that I could definitely take advantage of.

A Lot of Wachovia jobs are moving to First Union in Charlotte.

Winston Salem is going to miss Wachovia.

It's tough demoing cubicles that once was occupied by Wachovia employees.

I install, and a lot here lately, demo office furniture.

Hey any of you guys from NC work in finance or the business sector? I heard that there is a huge financial market in NC. Do you guys have any "inside" info or connections for jobs? I have been applying like mad down to NC charlotte and surrouding area. I want to get into something dealing with automobiles too. But I dont have much experience in that. But, right now I am working as a financial accoutant in securities. Thanks. Any help would be much appreciated.
