1st gen and 2nd gen

Hi Guys,
do anyone knows when the independent electronic control of the exhaust and intake valves has been introduced ?
i am buying a SR20VE halfcut from a P11 primera and would like to know if i can make it independent like the P12 nissan primera 20V.
do i need to change the ECU ?
has anyone know if besides this and the camshafts, if there are any other differences ?

My VVL, particularly the exhaust side, sounds like it kicks in and out quickly around 4k then quits until about 6k. All this with no power going to either solenoid and both are new.

Is it possible that VVL can kick in without the solenoid? Or what else would sound like that?
