Lots of newbie overload here, sorry for the length, but any help would be appreciated!
I recently came into ownership of a '92 NX2k with a neglected engine. It ultimately started to lose bottom end bearings (car only has 87k on it). Needed to have the car running, so I had a shop install a used engine (good supplier, engine was supposedly checked out, out of a '92 G20). This engine also sounds like it is on its way out. Very clacky, (sounds like top end of the engine so far) and after last night's oil change I could see tiny metal flakes in the oil in the filter, only two tanks of gas running on this one. When I changed the PCV valve the old one came out with a large chunk of burnt crusty crap on the end of it. It seems to be getting louder. I'll be dealing with the shop and supplier...
Question #1: This is almost rhetorical, but any hope for the current engine? I've come to the conclusion that these engines don't live well with neglect.
Question #2: As I have the original engine, one thought is to rebuild it, it's within my skill set. I'm not looking for a full-on hi-po build up, just a solid stock or stock plus effort. Any recommendations? What might be typical pitfalls (I know about the crank and crank bearing issues)to this? What might be an ballpark estimate of typical costs? The engine burned no oil, but I'm pretty sure the cams are wiped and at least one lower end bearing has spun. Hopefully this could be completed before the current engine craps and dies.
Question #3: It seems that everybody talks left and right about JDM motors and such. Seems likes a cost effective way to go, except that these are listed as sold for racing only, not emissions certification, not for use on the road in any way shape or form, don't want to hear about you putting it on the street. Yet, it seems lots of people are running them on the street. Lots of racers... How are people getting around this? In my area emissions checks are a way of life. Are they just going without the emissions gear, or are they swapping all the outside bits from one to the other? What's a typical cost?
Question #4: Are there any good sources of domestic engines that the emissions thing is not an issue? Are there any good sources of rebuilt engines that don't cost a frickin' arm and a leg? (example, local dealership wanted $5.3k to install a remanufactured engine, and that doesn't include any other bits that might be required, pretty funny).
Damn, welcome aboard.
Let me congradulate you on your knowledge already!!! and for reading up on all the info about our engines. Give yourself a pat on the back.
If you go with the JDM engine, you would have to swap out the manifolds in order to get the emissions stuff on there.
You would have to purchase US intake and exhaust manifolds.
When I did my swap, I left the JDM-no emission manifolds ON because Florida doesnt do emissions anymore. You can get a Primera JDM SR20 for $260 to $600 depending where you look.
I wouldnt pay over $500 for one.
I personnaly would not rebuild. These engine are too wierd for me. I would rather spend the money on a complete swap.

What do you mean by too wierd?
I would rather have the engine rebuilt with stuff I know that would go in then put in a used motor. It would cost more, but you never know if your getting an abused engine that can let go at any time.
The one link you posted for soshinusa, thats like 15 min from my house.

I mean that the SR20 is always Dynoing at different numbers and, to me, it is a very inconsistent engine. You never know what its going to do next. Thats just my own personnal opinion.
When I got my used motor I just performed a serious tune-up
including new gaskets everywhere and dropped her right in.
I preffered to do a "drop in" then a "open up and fix".
I had no gaurantee the new engine was in 100% perfect working order but I did open up both oil pans and VC and checked for damage. Everything was great. It was an automatic engine so the abuse it was put thru, if any, Im sure was minimal.
Yeah but auto's don't get get revved up in nuetral as much as manuals, and definately don't get downshifted as much as manuals, and auto's don't have to go through the famous teaching girls how to drive stick hell (j/k).
Smooth I get what your saying. It would be easier and cheaper to get a new used one, plus getting the newer one ready would be much easier since it's already out of the car. I guess it's all personal opinion and what needs to be fixed. I think my engine might need some new gaskets, so I'd rather just replace those then a whole new used engine.
I have to laugh at that girl stick driving thing, though!!!! LMAO!!!!
I promised her I wouldnt get mad, and at the first GRIND I yell ,"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!!!" LOL!!!!!
or give them a call and talk to brian.
the 800 # is on the bottom of their web page.
Thats where I ordered ALL my parts from.
And I saved a buck or two like Melissa Milano.

I dont mean to get all mushy but on my second date with my wife we ended up going in seperate cars and we ended up racing to our dinner spot. It was great. Then we raced back to her place.
She looked at my battery in the trunk and said, "oh, weight distribution". Needless to say, I fell in love and we got married a year and a half later. A woman after my own heart.

Yeah I had a girlfriend one time that let me take her muffler off her car and put a straight pipe on, pretty brave for a women.
KC1 I would also go with a JDM engine because after you rebuild the engine you will have around $1,000 in it due to all the parts and other goodies. The labor alone would probably be around $400.

You mean to tell me for years I thought battery in the trunk was so that you didn't have to run that power wire for the amp??? .... Seriously your lucky.
