this is awesome... i'll be keeping tabs on this thread. i'm very interested on what you have planned for the rear suspension. i'd think grafting the rear suspension from a gti-r would be the "easiest" route but maybe you could fabricate up a subframe for the rear. take tons of pics. also could you pm me a price on the jwt ecu. shipped to east providence ri 02914. thanks

I didn't have much time today but I managed to get a little accomplished. I removed the steering rack and worked on centering the engine to make the mounts. I'm going to get the engine all mounted then go from there adjusting what I need to for everything to work. In order to get the engine and awd transmission to fit you have to remove the driver side rear awd transmission mount. Its to bulky and hits the chassis.

Passenger side top mount is now bolted in (NX mount).

Dog bone mount is currently connected. You have to us NX/Sentra mount, Gti-r mount won't fit in bracket on dog bone without modifications. I will be cutting the dog bone right after the mount and then welding some tubing from it going to both sides of the car were it will be bolted. Basically the Gti-r has a similar design and it will help reinforce the front.

Passenger side front transmission mount which I will be modify so it works.

As you can see the Gti-r shift linkage works perfect now.

The drive shaft will fit right inside the exhaust tunnel. I have to do some more adjusting yet but you get the idea.

You could say I did a little weight reduction today. I don't exactly know what this was for but its getting removed now. It was bolted to the top of the sub frame and weighed in at 5lb 4.8oz with hardware.

I started on the sub frame today. Notched it 2" so far and will be reinforcing and boxing it in later after engine is in place.

Here is the chunk removed from the sub frame. I always keep the chunk I cut out so I can weld it back in when I box it.

As you can see from this picture the steering rack will need to be moved up. Not sure exactly how much at the moment.

I also started tearing apart the inside since I may need to modify the floor a bit in a couple spots.

I purchased some chassis mounts off of a Gti-r from fro20 which should arrive this weekend. After they arrive I will finish making my engine/transmission mounts and start working my way back.

Transmission went out on my step sisters car so I mostly worked on that today.

I did manage to finish tearing apart the inside of the NX thou.

Look at all that goodness in the corner.

Nothing really for updates today. I just cleaned everything off the floor of the NX and finished the tranny swap on the Saturn to get it out of the garage.

Driver Side Axles

The top one is from the NX and the bottom is the Gti-r. Length wise the NX axle is around 25 3/8in and the Gti-r axle also is around 25 3/8in.

The front of the axle which goes into the hub are similar. Thread pattern for the nut and spline are the same just slight different design where it fits in the hub. They will still work in the NX hub assemble and I believe the Gti-r's use the same wheel bearings and such anyways as the NX and sentras.

However the Gti-r axles and NX axles are not interchangeable because of the back of them. If you look closely in the picture you can see how they are different. The Gti-r axle has a bigger diameter and the splines are much shorter.

Passenger Side Axles

The top one is from the NX and the bottom is the Gti-r. The NX axle is around 37in and the Gti-r axle is around 37 3/8in.

The front of the axle which goes into the hub assembly are similar between the two. The thread pattern for the nut and spline are the same just slightly different designs where it fits into the hub. They will still work in the NX hub assembly. Also I believe the Gti-r's use the same wheel bearings and such anyways as the NX and Sentras.

Here is a picture of the middle of the axles. Mine didn't come with a bracket for support so I will have to look into it and then compare the two.

However the Gti-r axles and NX axles are not interchangeable because of the back of them. If you look closely in the picture you can see how they are different. The Gti-r axle has a lot shorter splines when compared to the NX axle. I'm not sure if the spline pattern is the same but it does look to be.

Remember the measurements are just estimates since its hard to get an exact measurement of a axle with a tape measure. Also they lengths seem a bit odd to me so I'm going to have to look into it some more to see why that is unless I measured wrong. Now if you had to I don't see any reason at the moment why you couldn't use the front of the NX axles and combine them with the back of the Gti-r axles if need be.

I finally had time to work on it again.

2-23-09

This is the complete awd transmission front mount off of the Gti-r. Now the interesting part is that it bolted right up where are fwd transmission mount goes.

Gti-r rear transmission mount

Now what I did was laid down some tape so I could mark where I needed to drill my holes.

I also needed to cut a part of the rear transmission chassis mount in order for it to sit flat.

Before

1st cut

2nd cut

I drilled my holes a bit big so I have room for adjusting if needed.

Make sure you have the other mounts bolted in place and you have a level to see when the engine is positioned correctly before marking and drilling your holes.

Here is the rear transmission mount bolted in place.

I started on my front mount today. I decided against hacking up the dog bone to use since that would be a waste.

I used 3/16 thick going from the existing dog bone holes in the radiator support to the mount and 1/4 thick going from side to side. Everything is just tacked together so I need to finish welding and boxing in the mount bracket as well as drilling my holes to bolt the side pieces. After that I will test the durability and see what I need to do for improvements.

I worked on it a little bit so far today. I should have time to finish it tonight and get it bolted in place so i'll have more pictures later.

After discussing things with my brother we came up with a different idea for the front engine mount bracket. The one I was making would more then likely cause issues later on down the road.

It will basically be a solid mount. The insert that bolts to the engine was removed from a junk strut laying around. None of the pieces are welded together yet.

The flat chunk of steel will be recessed into the tubing and my holes will be drilled in it to mount it were the dog bone originally was.

Here is the front mount bracket mounted and tacked together.

I have to do the rear mount on the fire wall yet then I can go on to finishing the sub frame. I'm going to try and get the front finished and the engine started this week or early next week.
