Is there any talk on where the 2007 Convention is going to be? I'd really like to see it somewhere within a days drive of me, say 8 hours. So there's Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Topeka, Wichita. I can certainly find out about having at Mid-America Motorplex in Glenwood Iowa, which is about 30 minutes from Omaha. I know someone else looked into this for the 2005 convention. I'd certainly be willing to get things setup for the next one as far as working with MAM on those details, lodging info, etc. Omaha's not a big city so other than the Zoo and the College World Series (which is moving elsewhere eventually) there's nothing people come here to see. However it's very easy to get around in. There's major interstate from all directions to get here.

That's fine, but who decides all this? I don't recall anyone ever asking the community to vote on any of this. Kinda sh*tty not to allow people to vote on it.

It's got nothing to do with voting. It's where the people who are willing to step up and volunteer to organize it that decide where it is going to be. It also helps to be part of SERCA as well. This is the SERCA Convention.

I see. I'll have to join SERCA then so I can have a voice, right after I join the QSCA, Quadrapalegic's Swim Club of America. They might acutally provide me with something as part of my membership. I say we need to hold conventions without SERCA then, because if the people who are going to go to them have no say in where they end up, that's pretty damn retarded.

Chicago was decided last year. They wanted it this year, but after hearing that the NE guys were interested, JP and the crew backed up and grabbed '07. The people that organize the conventions, are people that GO to conventons, and not just one. You will not believe the amount of planning that is involved. I had 9 months to plan '03 after the track the Kansas guys wanted to use, fell through. Even though 9 months sounds like a long time, there was a bunch of last minute things to do, right up to the day before, and the day(s) of. I've been going back and forth about hosting '09, but it depends on where the group is, and me too at that time.

college world series signed like another 3-4 years to stay in Omaha? College world series is the best, quick money, free booze, and hot chicks with like ratio of 25 to 1 guy.
Las Vegas in 08!!! is this for sure? sh*t that almost gets me more excited then Halo 3 coming out. Its so far away and they need to tease you with trailers. I will be 21 in 08 so that means alot more fun.

Yeah we REALLY need a sticky/faq on this subject. People just don't get this. Before people spend their hard earned money going to one of these there is a huge responsibility for the organizers to be responsible, trustworthy and EXPERIENCED. Every year we go through this, with people saying I want it in 'fillinthecityhere'. It usually costs $500 to over a $1000 to come to one of these. Imagine what it takes to organize one!

Vote? You put a team of folks together and organize it, and YOU TOO can have an SE-R convention in...uh...Nebraska?
Having been involved in these types of arguments for many, many different groups, I understand that it all comes down to having a core group of people in any specific area of the contry that are willing to do the work. AND IT'S A LOT OF WORK! You can't simply "have a vote" and everybody decides it's gonna be in, say, Waco TX then there's no one there willing to do the work. You want one local to you? Then get off your ass and put together a coordinating group and make an offer to SERCA host one. Until that happens, it's going to be every place EXCEPT close to you.
Been there, done that, no empathy for the lazy or ignorant. - GA

I don't want one in Nebraska because there's no track here, nevermind there's not enough SE-R enthusiasts here to even organize a small get together. I'm simply asking that there be at least one convention within a days drive for those of us who live in the central U.S. I've done far more to help this community than showing up at conventions is ever going to accomplish so don't call me lazy or ignorant. I've never even heard of your ass before. People who want to host a convention, which I'm sure more than just guys in Chicago wanted to host 2007, should put there offer ont he table and there should at least be input from people likely to attend.
I've been to 3 Conventions so far, and only one was w/in your definition of a "days drive" (no offense intended), and that was B'ham which was exactly 8 hours for me. TX in '05 was 12 hours, and PA this year was 14 hours; so I'm looking forward to Chicago next year (~6 hours from me).
Rob, I understand your point about voting; but even though you can think it through logically, there are many people out there that just expect it to arrive where they want. FL is home to tons of SR guys, but no one has stepped up to organize one - I think Will is the only one who has attended one lately.
Having someone truely willing (crazy?) to do the leg work is the key. Most of the guys who have done a Convention swear they won't do another one (but some have).

Rob, Greg has been involved in this community longer than you've probably owned an SE-R. He races his NX2000 in ITA. I would not call him out as he has done a ton for this community too.
Rob (?), allow me to apologize for one thing: I did not intend to call YOU specifically ignorant and/or lazy, I was speaking generically. Further, I used the term "ignorant" in the true sense of the word: lack of knowledge, in this case of what it takes to put on one of these events.
My point is, this type of decision is not up for a vote to the membership or the community. Because of the effort and work involved in such an endeavor, the choice of where to have the convention must be chosen from within those groups of folks that have shown the motivation and experience to put one on. If the only choices are either Dubuque (IA) and Iowa Park (TX), then it looks like we're driving to Texas (can't imagine having one in Iowa.)
This is a common complaint among many groups that I frequent (cars, airplanes, etc) It takes a magical, generous group of folks to dig up the courage to basically put their discretionary lives on hold for a year in order to try and satisfy the majority of the "community". If you've got what it takes, then I STRONGLY encouage you to spearhead an affort to have the annual event some place of your choosing. It takes a lot of work, but in the end I'm certain it's very rewarding (hypocritically speaking, 'cause I'm too damn lazy to do it!!) - GA
I guess I can see your point. It's sort of like any other convention. The people who decide they're going to bust ass to make it happen are the ones who decide where it'll be.

No worries, Chicago is a lot closer to you than me! It shouldnt be too far, and I think its going to be a great convention.
