Hi all. I am in the process of building a NASA PTE car. It started as an SER Cup car but.... well, you know. This car is located in Yorktown, VA and will compete in the NASA's Mid-Atlantic division.
I bought the chassis in Porsmouth from a guy that didn't take care of it. The paint was scratched and worn through and a lot of primer was showing. Every single boot, bushing, and other rubber/plastic part was completely shot. All four C-V boots and both steering boots had gaping holes. The tie rods and ball joints were crap. It was quite a mess and had about 220K miles on it. In other words, it was the perfect car for my evil plan.
There's not much that is really special about the car relative to what has already been done by previous racers. I put a fantastic cage in it designed and built by Mitch Piper. All of the east coast guys will know his name. He does great work.
The only thing that I did differently than what I have commonly seen on the boards is that I routed my oil cooler lines around the driver's side of the engine compartment. I did this so that I would have enough room to mount a thermostat.
I'm posting because I started the car yesterday for the first time after installing a JDM motor.
Other mods.... Transmission rebuild with Nismo LSD, Oil cooler, thermostat, oil temp gauge, oil pres gauge, water temp gauge, Sparco pro2000 seat mounted to cage, Fidanza AL flywheel, ACT clutch, Fastbrakes 11" kit, stainless brake lines, Koyo radiator, Mezeire electric water pump, Push button starter, Hotshot Gen 6 header, VRS 3" exhaust, Bits and Pieces suspension (on the way), ES Bushings everywhere, Progress rear bar, short shifter, Wink mirror, battery relocation with 15 lb gel cell, JWT ecu, S5 cams, oil filter relocation. All of this seems like pretty standard stuff. Still, I was thrilled when the damn thing started. It's fitted with the stock intake. I may add an intake but I'm butting up against the points ceiling to stay in PTE.
If anyone is interested, here are a few pictures. The driver's side has a very nice set of NASCAR bars that are not visible. Sorry.
I'm sorry I didn't copy everyone else's setup. If you need a preacher to tell you what mods to put on your car, the Reverend Veilside180sx might have a suggestion.
Thanks for the kind words, guys. I'm looking forward to my shakedown event but I'm REALLY looking forward to racing.
I'll be glad to dyno. I'd be very interested to see what it does. FYI, I emailed Sean Thompson (NASA-MA registrar) to get my number and he informed me that SER Cup is "dead". He also said that the ex-cup cars would be placed in PTE where we have points for power adders and a min weight. SER cup was power to weight ratio. I'll go with whatever. I picked the s5 cams b/c I wasn't worried about the P/W thing. Ill go with the flow, though. No problem.
Oh, and incidentally, we'll be running with Stinger. I seem to remember that you guys made a couple of cameo appearances in Autobahn :-).
That cage is very nice, as all Piper cages tend to be. Car is comming along nicely.
I didnt realize you were the owner of that Talon, i have seen you at MANY of my track events, i drive a black 240sx turbo, if that actually seperates me from all the others u may have seen.

Hi, Mike. It's going to be close. I'm at about +38 points with the stock intake. The rule changes kept me from being thrown under the bus for the cage. After that I deleted the planned air dam and a few other small things.
My biggest challenge for staying in PTE will be making weight (I think). I'm going to get it weighed on calibrated scales as soon as I get Monty's suspension on and the glass back in. It shipped Mon Jan 22.
scott we don't have to dyno anymore because of PT, i was just curious to see how we all compared power wise w/ the various setups
we ran autobahn at hyperfest (that was when i took the overall win in authobahn , most of the time that had us in stinger, (allthogh SE-R cup was the red-headed step child of NASA

I'd love to get it on the dyno. If NASA doesn't have one available we may be able to get together somewhere and do it on a non-race weekend. So far I have run it for about 10 min on stock cams and the ECU. It idles and revs fine. I'm going to drive it around a little in the neighborhood today if it doesn't rain. I can't wait for you guys to see the car. I had a friend paint it. It's a 5/0 car right now with the current paint job. I'll be #67 next season.
Oh yeah....Goofus, I've seen your car. FMIC, right?
Actually, there's not that much taping on the inside b/c everything gets painted. I taped both sides of all the windows when I painted the interior. I also removed the front and back glass so that my painter could access the cage better. I painted it right where she sits. Some of the photos show some rolled up plastic near the ceiling. That's my paint booth rolled up and tucked away. I can be ready to paint a car in my garage in under an hour.
Make sure you have a new respirator. The fumes did get thick. The worst part was sanding and cleaning the bars. That took FOREVER. It made prepping the outside of the car a walk in the park. The outside took 20% of the prep time.
Still, my total investment was one weekend, half of a weekday and $325 worth of paint supplies including paint, sandpaper, primer and additives.
I also had to buy a lot of 4mil plastic and some fairing strips. Probably another $150 but heck... now I have a paint booth. :-)
I weighed it last friday and it came in at 2419lb with me in it and an almost full tank of gas (about 1 gal under). Both doors are gutted and everything obvious (from a weight standpoint) has been removed from the car.
I'm going to build a weight box held by the passenger side seat mounts and add 50 lb to get me up to race weight and more weight to allow for 5 gal of fuel consumption during a race. That should get me to weight (2467) plus I'll add more weight for fuel (4-5 gallons worth). The cross-weights came in at 52/48. I'll work on that after I get the weight in.
My car is at +38 pts right now and barely in PTE. I can't afford to take a weight penalty.
I can't tell you guys how much fun I've had building this car. Out of all the days that I worked on the car since Thanksgiving of last year, there have only been two that felt like work.
I just hope I'm doing the right thing by trying to stay in PTE.
sounds good scott, i think mine with me in it is somewhere in between your 2419 and the 2467
ps. of course you should stay in PT, that's where all the real racing will be ;-)
i guess you are doing to comp school friday? i probably won't get there till late friday night (as always)
