building a road race car

so far it's been over a year since i started building my car. with the constant help of kojima it's getting closer and closer to being finished.

i picked the car up in june of 06. i had just transferred high schools in the middle of the year and had an F in math because the curriculums were completely different and since math builds off itself, i did not have the proper background. anyways i told my dad i would get a 3.0 no problem because i was doing well in all my other classes. he said there was no way so we made a bet. if i could pull of a 3.0 with an F in a class he would get me a racecar. end of the year and 3.2 =] (pretty damn good off the bat for a transfer student). he was really really pissed so i made up the class in summer school and he told me i better get an A and if so the deal was still on. A+ baby.

so heres the start to it:

stripping the interior:

buddy james removing firewall firemat:

buddy mihai removing seam sealer:

all stripped:

car went to technosquare in october.

main hoop:

seat rails:

gusseting:

up to front strut towers:

nascar bar:

almost done:

then the car came home and i meticulously painted and primered it.

zinc chromate aircraft grade primer:

rustoleum industrial grade machine grey:

then the engine bay:

and brakes:

interior all painted:

now reworking all the brake lines. 75% finished. all done by my hands.

altima master cylinder:

fronts:

tilton proportioning valve to rear:

all my goodies:

as it sits now by project phoenix:

what do you guys think?

Car looks great. The wheels should hold up well - I've been running them since 1998. I'd suggest taking your nice new RA1s and Volks off for when you're working on the car though! You don't want to get them banged up or get paint on them.

I'm curious about the suspension too. From the pics, it looks like a nice street coil-over set. Wondering if it would hold up to race conditions.

Do you have camber plates on all four corners? You picked up the right plates. If I were to do it again, I'd get the GC style, rather than the Cuscos, which mount on the underside of the strut tower and eat up some suspension travel.

haha dont be its super tedious to build to my liking.

im running advance design struts with adjustable rebound and damping with a digressive damping curve, ground control coilover kit with eibach springs, front and rear ground control camber plates, and energy busings all around.

the wheels are my neighbors. had to borrow them because my stock wheels didnt clear the brakes. my stupid mistake. gave them back when i picked up my 5zigen fno1r's.

yes i am running the ground controls on all four corners. the suspension is race proven and the ground controls seem pretty buff.

Wow, totally jealous for sure! That cage is really nice! Car is coming along really well. What are you going to fill the sunroof with?

As for the MC, is that a non-ABS unit with two ports plugged? Don't they usually have the big hex nut thingies on 'em?

i bought a metal shrinker to bend the aluminum around the radius of the sunroof. i was planning to pop rivet the frame in and nutsert/allen bolt a sheet of aluminum onto that. there is a bar going right under it so the cover doesnt have to be super strong. MIGHT do carbon fiber just for looks. aluminum is pretty light as it is.

the master cylinder IS ABS. picked that one because it is bigger. i eliminated abs from the car including from the wiring harness.

here is what i'm doing:
front: master cylinder port 1 -> brake T fitting -> left & right
rear: master cylinder port 2 -> proportioning valve -> brake T fitting -> left & right

Only a few things i see from my untrained eye.

Why nascar bar, then the bar also close to the driver? I would like a little more driver room personally. And if you are going nascar bars, you can make it strong enough and hang it out there a bit.

Then why the adjustable rails? Do you see using it like at an enduro with multi drivers? Why not a more secure mounting that is fixed?

What class you going racing in? Cause I know like ITA you cant tie into the front strut towers like that.

Like spnx said, get GC camber plates. you can modify them to fit on the rear as well with some work. But you will be looking at a lot more custom work on rear suspension as well.

Personally Id go lot stiffer springs and koni double adjustable with race valving. but we all know how bad the b13 suspension sucks...so its not easy or cheap to make it go around a corner not looking like a snow plow

and i will add that i am running progress sways in front and rear and a progress subframe support in the front.

The only growing I did after 18 was outward.

Lookin good. I'm more jealous that you're getting into it this early than of the car itself. Best of luck.

Occasionaly but not a full season, with my mom to take care of now, I don't like being away from home more than I have too.
