Picked it up Sunday. Clean truck that runs great. Got 18mpg coming back over the grade (7% over 6 miles) and low 20s on flat land with a giant wind sail of a camper shell on it (removed now). 67k miles, automatic (48RE), HO (325hp) Cummins.
Finally got a real truck, to bad it has a girly trans.
05 CTD owner the 6 speed manual rocks!!
Get yourself edge juice w/ attitude you will not regret it. Can you say HOLY POWAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm assuming it's 2wd? If so you'll get great milage. Mine is 4wd and I stiil get low 20's on the highway and there isn't a time ever that I don't have at least 500+ lbs of tools and crap in the bed.

Funny you should say that. The manual I was looking at got vetoed by the WAR dept...

Sure does. Oh well, the 48RE is actually more reliable (as long as you don't throw too much power at it) than the overpriced Chevy's "Allison" trans, just doesn't have the same number of gears.

See above.
I'll probably just do breathing mods. Thing's still under warranty (7 years, 100k Cummins warranty FTW!), and they can see those programmers, especially if you have a failure.

We'll probably get about the same. The 6 spd gets about 1-2 mpg better than the auto, but your 4wd negates that. You hand calculate this? The overhead becomes really inaccurate with the programmers.
You're towing en enclosed trailer right? What size? What kind of towing mileage are you getting?

Hand calculated is around 20 maybe a little better depending on how fast I feel like going on the highway. Yes I know the LIE-O-METER is a few mpg off usually about 2+/- a few tenths. I am getting somewhere between 11 to 14 towing the trailer, like before depends on driving habits and roads. It is a 28' 10,000 gross loaded to the balls with spares and crap.

a quad cab loooong box, damn that's going to be fun making a U-turn
Yeah, it's not too bad for street driving. It's parking that sucks. Gotta back it in if there isn't an open spot adjacent.

Now I can lay out in the back on long road trips! Thanks Steve....haha
Word. Now that we've filled in ALL of the damage on the right side with bondo, we don't need to corner weight it anymore. sh*t's gonna be FAST!
You're welcome, btw. $0.30 cheaper per gallon fuel FTW!

Word. The 7.3L is a tough engine. Yours a manual? That 4R100 isn't the most trustworthy transmission if you throw power-adders at it...

Not bad. Those enclosed trailers really destroy mileage...

Yup, I has 3 pedals. I specifically wanted a manual to keep from having the problems of the Automatics behind the PSDs, and then 11k miles into my ownership I had a freak clutch failure and ended up spending a bunch to fix it anyways.

Your rig looks familiar as hell...Do you come into AutoZone in Ashland? I think I talked to you about airride on my Yota one night. And I got the white SER there now
Sorry to jack the thread, I love how long the Dodge is, sick!

Nice truck. Bought a 4x4 RAM 1500 Quad Cab standard (short) bed in 2003, really wanted that diesel in an MT, strongly vetoed by my WAR dept, and since I was talking her up from a Dakota, took what I could get. Really wanted a 2500 with Cummings motor so I could also plow with it off season (hey, it's New England). NICE choice for a tow rig.
Loaded up mpg vs. unloaded are not very different w/o a trailer, they both suck with the gas motor - best I've seen is 16 and normal hwy is closer to 14. I'd take that full length bed, too, the thing is already so damn big you can't park it normally anyway, what's a little more? A LOT.
If you didn't get the "tow package" with it, highly recommend the AT trans cooler, not knowing about the trans you have and just the HEMI, the trans cooler is key for long life with 5 gears. IIRC PS cooler was standard, tow package besides wiring etc.
All Cummins-powered Dodges come with trans coolers that are pretty ginormous. The AT models use the 48RE on the HO 04+ models, which is a pretty strong 4 speed automatic in stock form. I'm flushing the fluid and making sure the bands are adjusted properly this weekend or the next, but it shifts and drives nicely now. A testament to the 48RE is Chris "Shaggy" Allen has kept one alive for years now towing big trailers with a big power tune on it (+200lb-ft, IIRC). If he can't "shag" it, it'll be fine with my stock motor.
Long bed is a major PITA to park, but I mainly just back into spots, which makes it a lot easier. I don't drive it every day, so it doesn't matter anyway.
If you had gotten that MT diesel back then, you'd have a 305HP/555lb-ft HO unit with the NV5600. Good combo. If you had gotten an automatic, you'd likely have the 245HP/460lb-ft (IIRC) SO with the 47RE, a horribly weak combination.
I feel better now If I had been able to swing the 2500 no way I could have sold the MT to my wife since she drives it, too. Sounds like I would have ended up with the worst combo. Then add both towing and snowplow use 4-6 months a year, that would have been interesting to see how long the trans lasted!
Btw, the RAM PS cooling lines tend to leak at the steering gear (at least on the 1500), there was a TSB for defective factory installation, mine were replaced under warranty. Something to keep an eye on or check out, about the only problem I've had with the truck since buying it new back in August 2003. Well, other than everything 8' long that I carry, I can't close the gate. Be happy you got the long bed, trust me.
