EC Cup: VA Region licensing requirements

I know a few of you have NASA or SCCA licenses already, but those of you that don't, here is a brief paraphrasing of the Virginia Region licensing prodedures. (Right now VA is the region that has offered SE-R Cup events, so if you are in another place, let us know so we can start working in that region, too.) These are not official, so make sure you check with VA before you get going. The VA region can be reached at registration@nasaracing.net.

The main thing, if you are getting a car ready and intend to race, is to get out there and start working through the HPDE system. Like other NASA regions, HPDE is used as a training and education system for future race drivers. Not only will this get you valuable seat time, but you'll meet fellow races who can answer lots of questions and the officials who can get you licensed.

They hold Competition License schools, but unless you have been running their HPDE events, you will need to get your other track/club experience okayed before you can enroll.

On some weekends when they do a Friday track day, they have a full competition school with classroom sessions and on-track experience including practice of standing starts, rolling starts, racing through turns, etc. and short practice races. They have other racers in the field who are evaluating the students.

If they do not have a competition school, they will do a license evaluation during any of their event weekends. Although you won't get the classroom sessions, you are evaluated on track and meet with the racers and regional director who are evaluating them. They limit enrollment to 8 for the license evals on non-school weekends and for the last few full competition schools they've have had between 15-20 entrants. Both groups also must pass a written test based on CCRs, which you can download for free from the NASA site (www.nasaproracing.com) or find on the SE-R Cup site under Rules (www.sercup.com).

The fee to go through the school or license evaluation is an extra $50 on top of the HPDE cost and you must also bring a check for $50 that is sent to National if they pass which covers the NASA National licensing fee.

To be evaluated for a provisional license either through the comp school or during a license evaluation weekend, one must have a fully prepped race car and driving suit, etc. but for driving in HPDE events before you get your license, you only need to fulfill the HPDE safety requirements.

I was kind of told this. Does this means go through at least HPDE level 3 and then apply for it? I believe it does.

Its not quite that bad, but I know the VA region does want you to go through some HPDE at least before you think about trying to get a competition license.

I've been to one HPDE but I believe you have to pass through level three.

It will depend a lot on your existing skill level. If you've never been out on the track before, don't expect to jump right in to a competition school. Nor should you want to. There's a guide on the SE-R Cup site about improving skill while building the car called The 5 Steps to Becoming a Racer (the del Ghetto guide) which has a lot of good info for beginning racers.

Of course, if you have a license with SCCA or another organization you most likely will breeze right through the licensing proceedures. If you have experience on track with other groups, or at autocross, you will advance much faster as well.

All of the HPDE are to just make sure you will drive under control and understand all of the safety rules and regulations. Additionally, it is a great learning experience to hone your skills and tune the car for better performance.

I have autox for about a year sporatically. I don't want to jump in right a way, but want to be there from the beginning or near it. I like to meet new people and I want them to know me as a competative racer and enthusiast. I have to agree about the HPDE courses, they really are great. If you think you know what to do or what you are doing, then go to one of these classes and you will be suprised, excited and humbled all at once. It was an interested time my first day out, but I loved every minute of it. Especially when on the last day, last race I passed two M3's and about 4-6 other cars. Needless to say that didn't help my effort of keeping money in my wallet (because I'll be going to more HPDE classes come summer time.) The car is getting redone this winter.

P.S. - If anyone needs any Se-r parts I should have some extra ones around. If you need them e-mail me, please don't post it here in this thread. Thanks.

Yeah, that's one thing racing does is lighten your wallet and take away all of your free time. But after the blast we had at Infineon Raceway this past event, even will all of the people not making the trip, it was well worth it.
