Cage Welding near glass?

My cage fabricator is telling me he would "prefer" that I remove the front windshield glass when he fabs my cage later (hopefully) this month.
His concern is about damaging or distorting the glass when he welds up the front portion of the halo.
Is this common? I really would prefer to not tackle the job of removing a perfectly good windshield. Ways around this? General opinions?

Re: Cage Welding near glass?

I'v used a piece of card board duct taped to the glass. It's alot easyer to weld that part of the cage with the glass out though.

Re: Cage Welding near glass?

I pulled out my front glass myself (with lotsa help) for having the cage done. It isn't hard to do, but takes a lot of time and muscle power. Just get a wire and two handles and cut the thing out slowly. Carry it vertically when you take it out to reduce the chance of breakage.

This is common. If you take out the windshield, you'll likely get a better fit and better welds.

Re: Cage Welding near glass?

My windshield has two stars in it from welding the cage near it. And that doesn't even include welds to the front of the forward supports. I'm removing the windshield to finish those. My windshield already needed to be replaced so I didn't care, but I would remove it if I were you.

Re: Cage Welding near glass?

the cardboard method works ok it keeps the flying sparks away. It doesnt help with the heat though, Its close enough it will usually light the carboard on fire, so if you go that route use something fireproof, Like lexan or something that wont ignite so easily. Also its not just to not damage the glass it makes it alot easier to weld. If you dont go all the way around and your car is new they will check to make sure the bead goes all the way around, and if it doesnt you will have to fix it. If you can bribe a glass guy they will usually pull your glass for like 30 dollars, otherwise the 2 handles and a piece of thin piano wire works good to

Re: Cage Welding near glass?

Well, I guess I will just suck it up and give it a shot, er, I mean I'll try removing it.
The FSM is not real clear (of course), but it appears the top sealing piece is not re-usable. Can anyone confirm this? After some preliminary checking, I don't think it's going to come out nicely along the top.

Re: Cage Welding near glass?

I remember the top being easier because you could "get in there" better, as opposed to the bottom and corners where it is hard to work a cutting wire.

For the trim, don't worry about throwing it away. Real race cars don't need that

Re: Cage Welding near glass?

There is another option. This is what I did. It is the best way to weld all the way around.

Re: Cage Welding near glass?

Well, let me just say that taking out a windshield is a royal pain in the keester. I am up to two small cracks, one at the top and one at the bottom edge of the passenger side. It may still be salvageable, but I still haven't got all the rubber cut along the bottom edge. Sheesh. I did already check, I can source a new one for about $125 locally, but that's $125 I had planned on spending elsewhere. Stupid windshield.
