Electrical Guru’s: Need some electrical help and explanation for fuel lights

I am looking to remove the stock fuel level gauge and use led's or another form of warning if possible. What I have gathered from another forum member is:
Quote:
Why not wire a LED in to come on at a 20L mark? That should give plenty of warning or have 4 LED's 3/4 1/2 1/4 and empty simple enough to wire in a chain to turn off or on a LED at a desired point.
Quote:
well basically your fuel sending unit is a resistant. You need to do is figure out what voltage the sending unit is putting out at the desired tank level and make a resistor to work at the voltage outputs to shut off the LED.

I think it should go
Sending unit LED then the resistor to ground.
You also need to factor in the amount of power the LED's are consuming too i think before you choose your resistor’s?
Would you guys be able to explain how to wire this? Would love to have 4 led's instead of the gauge, so a different gauge could be put in its place. I'm not the best with electrical things like this. So any help and input would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to make any other suggestions also.
