I'm planning an SR20VE swap at the end of the summer. The Daughterboard looks like an interesting option for a couple reasons:
1) Cheaper than JWT
2) I'm always for supporting homebrew development
3) Post install tuneability
However, I'm not too familiar with how stable these ECUs are for every day applications. I have heard that the current SR20VE application isn't as fuel efficient and is a little harsher at low RPMs than JWT.
So this brings up a few questions:
1) Is the ECU easily tuned? Mathematics and computers are no mystery to me, but I have never worked with an ECU before. I'm assuming fuel maps and the like are just matrices or tables.
2) Is it possible to tune the Daughterboard to be just as "good" as a JWT?
3) I'm planning on using the Daugherboard with two summit switches for VVL activation... I doubt there would be any conflict with this... is there?
4) Is it possible to tune the ECU while it's ON the dyno, instead of pulling the chip out, burning the rom, and reinstalling?
Thank you for your time, and I'm glad to see someone has taken their time to provide a fully tuneable alternative to the expencive JWT ecu!
Keep up the good work.
Oh and.. Get sr20boston to put a section on the site for ECU roms and testing... (Like a seperate PHP page where you can browse different ecu setups and people can post, then have discussion below their post (much like a php photo album).) The forum just isn't cutting it, it doesn't allow the room to expand and update roms in an efficient way. I'd love to see the community use the Calum ECU a lot more... the potential is there to do pretty much anything.
did you email him? He doesn't like nor answer/check PM's.

MPG can be increased and harshness can be tuned out.
1. Its pretty easy to tune, Check out this section.
2. Yes, you can even make it better then JWT.
3. No problems
4. Yes with emulators.

Easily enough for us forum retards to figure out.
2) Is it possible to tune the Daughterboard to be just as "good" as a JWT?
Each application is different, so merely providing the ability to tune it makes it better than a jwt.
3) I'm planning on using the Daugherboard with two summit switches for VVL activation... I doubt there would be any conflict with this... is there?
not sure but i think hes working on a new board which miight makes this even easier than you think..
4) Is it possible to tune the ECU while it's ON the dyno, instead of pulling the chip out, burning the rom, and reinstalling?
Romulator makes this possible, youll have to read more on it somewhere else ***.
hope it helps

I love my cars, but I'll let you guys keep spending all your money on them. I'm getting a house
The daughterboard is just hardware, regardless of the brand (be it mine, JWTs, Tomeis, or anybody elses), and does not effect the performance of the car (special daughterboards aside, like JWTs nitrous or water injection board). Its the programming that makes all the difference.
NA tunes are, by and large, waaaaaaaay easier to do than turbo programs (even VE programs). If you want to learn how your ecu really works, and you like fiddling and the ability to control things, tuning your own ecu is for you. If you don't then buy a JWT or some other plug-and-play ecu. Btw, I sell a daughterboard and the installation service, not the program. There is no such thing as a 'calum ecu', just a calum daughterboard. I preburn the daughterboard with a program as a courtesy, not as something you purchase. However, the more people that get involved with this stuff the more likley that there exists an off the shelf tune that will work for you right out of the box. That being said, I assume when you purchase a board that you know (or at least will learn) what your doing.
I'm planning on going with your daughterboard for tuning my future VE. Would you suggest that I get the daughterboard installed and play around with the DE before I run a VE program?
