I bought the FTDI based one from CoolDrives as recommended by PLMS and it works great. If anyone needs to buy one, this is the one to get.... the price is right, and it's a well proven device.
i got a targus usb-serial adaptor, noname converter (not ftdi/cignal). probably on average once every few hours of use it will cause laptop to restart (hence not recommended)
ftdi ones are by far best from most accounts. driver support is second to none also
well, does a com port show up in device manager->ports section? if not then youll need to install drivers etc. would have thought theyd be supplied to you on cd?
my FTDI (GUC232 from "iogear" i picked up at walmart for like $8 a year ago) didnt work with ANY consistancy trying to dump the rom, but worked fine on my friends IBM laptop with builtin serial. the adapter worked fine however for logging, and normally got 10-20% done with the rom dump (i will admit sometimes it will drop the streams after 20-30 minutes of use)
calumsult... lol, but actually, i THOUGHT it was the FTDI chipset, but i googled "IOGear GUC232A" and im pretty sure its NOT a FTDI chip, oh well, works good enough for logging, and good enough to START dumping the rom, lol. either way i probably have the most "homemade" consult adapter, its the old zcontrol PCB, thats just covered completely in hot-glue, no connector for the consult either, just paperclip halves soldered to the wires, with elec. tape covering em... push come to shove, ill just use my buddies IBM again!
i think somebody may have mentioned that once or twice, its only a problem when i use it for a LONG time, then it might require a software reconnect... who cares? i built this thing like 3 years ago.
Anyone know if we can just replace the st232 chip and outgoing db9 with a ftdi usb interface. Would any caps have to be changed on the board?? If not, all that would be needed to do is solder the ftdi interface onto the corresponding pins where the st232 use to be and have a usb female plug instead of a db9 plug.
Anyone have any experience with the following? I have a $25 off coupon code for dell so I wanted to get one from there . I never order anything from there, so I'm trying to get something I need.
