Weird. My Chilton manual specs 0.033" for 1991 SR20DE, why so small?

Plat plugs out of the box came out close to 0.045". Guess I will use them as-is and see how it goes. All 4 were evenly set, so guessing that's an intentional setting not just coincidence.

My GTI-R originally had platinum plugs gapped at 1.1mm (0.433 thou) and they would blow-out at peak rpm and WOT.
On advice I changed the gap to 0.9mm (0.354 thou) and there was an improvement.
Then a bright spark mate, to coin a phrase, suggested I change the platinum plugs for "copper core" plugs and set the gap at 0.75-0.8mm (0.298-0.315 thou).
I set them to 0.75mm (rounded 0.30 thou), change them when required, spirited driving every oil change 5,000km (3000 miles), around town as a shopping trolley every second oil change at 10,000km (6,000 miles).
Subsequently they get changed every 5,000km.
Been running like this now for 60,000km and hasn't missed a beat.

The basics of spark is this:
The wider the gap 1.0-1.1mm the more chance the spark will get "blown-out".
The narrower the gap 0.75-0.8mm the less chance the spark will get "blown-out".
Just like a candle.
Stand up close and a light puff will blow it out, stand a foot or two away and you have to huff and puff pretty hard to blow it out, so the same with spark plugs.
Does that fit the high school explanation?
gaz

Kudos to this thread!!! My jaw has dropped and I'm in all
This has to be one of THE BEST Explanations I have ever read!! I was glued to the screen like a baby breast feeding

I must say again Kudos!! My head is leaning to one side lol

I'm a start changing plugs every oil change! Shoot I just waited 15,000 miles to change my BKR7E's.... and I'm a pizza driver

Great info!! I wish my Big Toe was this smart!! I'd talk to him all the time

Jesus christ, this thread is overkill. It seems like nobody clearly answered the OP's question so i will.

User manual for my 96 SE-R says 0.39 - 0.44 and recommends platinum plugs.
Buy em, gap em, put a little thread goo on the threads, stick 'em in the cylinder head, and call it a day for the next 10-20k miles or beyond.

I dunno about these engines but i've ran NGK platinums in everything from american, german, to japanese cars. I've pulled 25k+ mi NGK platinums out of my BMW that i loved to redline and they didn't look bad at all.

I might be new to sr20de's but i'm talking about doing this in 5 previous cars, so i figure these aren't special by any means.

BTW stay away from bosch platinum +4/+2, those are *crap*

I generally try to not buy snake oil that is advertised all over every medium as being the best. Any of the crazy plug designs are stupid, and IF they do make any improvements, it's more than likely minute, and on an OHV small block, with sh*tty combustion chamber design. Those need all the help they can get with flame propagation.
With that being said, the BKR6E's work, plain and simple. Why change something that works, and is ALSO cheap?
