Squeling Starter

I understand that there is a problem with curtain starters on the Se-R, they squel when you start the car. I have a 93 Se-R and it is getting worse. Does anyone know what is a good starter to replace it with and also how difficult of a job is it. Any help is appreciated!!!

there was a good write up about this on se-r.net, IIRC it was the Mitsubishi starters that tended to squeal, but the Hitachis were the newer, better ones. Or it could be the other way around. Either way, I had mine replaced under my used car warranty, I shelled out 100 bucks for the deductible, it was a 350 dollar job. The starter itself cost 200....

But it sounds so much better without that damn noise!!

???

I replaced my starter with the Mitsu (Mitsubishi's are supposed to be the none squeelling starter). The Mitsu looks way different, sounds way better, and the one I got had a different connector than the Hitachi so you just switch the connector for the hitachi and your ready to go.

$350 for a starter replacement? WOW, when I was having the no start in the NX we ripped the starter off of the Sentra and we did it in a parking lot and took us no longer than 25 minutes, seriously. One guy going to work up top and one going to work underneath it's a pretty easy thing to change. Not as easy as a Toyota, though. The starter on the Corolla is totally exposed on the bellhousing facing you when you open the trunk, it would probably take longer to change the oil on it than change the starter.

I have a bit of squeal in my '93. Is it bad at all, apart from being annoying?

Mine has been doing it for two years. It gets worse when it's cold out. Other than being annoying, I've had no problems. I'll replace it one day. Oh, and I've got the newer design starter with the support on the end of the pinion.
