Rattling & Ticking! What else could you want!

I have searched and searched, ive found stuff about rod knocking, spun bearings, ticking, fan belts that can cause ticking, rod knocking that may sound like a soft sewing machine noise... but im still not sure what it is, can someone advise/help/not flame me

Quick run down:
I have two differnt noises that have been comming from my engine bay. A rattling and a ticking. i have recorded them both, sorry about the download speed of the sound.

Silvia 94 S14 SR20DE
About 130k on the clock.

Ticking:
The noise happens whens it cold and after it has warmed up, its always there. More of a quite tick, ticking gets louder as i rev it.

im not sure if its the start of rod knock, or its just HLA's ticking or what. Its been there for awhile i think, havent really taken notice till now.

I still have good power, and high end rpm power is still good. i drive it with respect and i drive it hard sometimes.

Ive tried the power balance test, but i cant get all the plugs off, danm plugs, will try again tomorrow morning

I think the problem is i dont know what sounds = what problem, ie i dont know what rod knock sounds like

heres a link to the ticking sound

Rattling
Been there since have had the car, ive only had it 7 months

The noise only happens after the car has warmed it AND only happens in the fraction of the secound as you accelerate or decelerate. It happens as you change gears i guess cos u have to ease off the gas and put it back on. other at a steady speed or at idle you cant hear it.

I can reproduce the sound by going to the TB and pressing and depressing the accelerater back and forth quickly.

Tried an oil change dosent make much of a differances, its still there just not as loud after an oil change.

Got no idea what this is, cams making noise? HLA's? Flat spot on the cam? //shrugs

Rattling sounds like this

Conculsion
Is my car goin to blow up? I hope not.
Whats the hell is that rattling and ticking noise?
And what technicly is rod knock, what happens?

This is what my car sounds like with the mic by my hip above the drivers wheel well (right hand drive)

Thanks for any input guys out there have, ive looked so much, but you dont know what anything sounds like until you hear it your self i guess

i have some rattling/ticking noises in my 93 se-r also. the rattling is when i first start it.... i believe my rattle is my timing chain tensioner gone bad :o(. im not sure what yer rattle could be..... could be anything. could be heat shield, loose exhaust, etc. as far as my ticking noise i have similar to your's im also unsure of what this could be. i know i have exhaust leaks and such in my header area and i think my tickin might be related to that, but could also be an electrical prob. my car has 233,XXX miles, burns no oil what soever. i think it's funny car runs great has great power and burns no oil and other things are starting to go up... so the engine itself is outlasting the sensors, and accessory parts. sorry i could not be of some better help. email me if u have any questions concerns or just want to chat about the sr20 in general. dumped200sx@yahoo.com. take care

Tried to do the power bal test today, man those inject plugs are hard to get off, specialy the ones at cylinder 3 and 4 anyway after much pain i was able to test 3 of the cylinders, still dosent solve my problem ***, i tried the screw driver aganst the block trick, sounded like the injecters ticking, so im hopeing its that. but the rattling still has me confused.

Any other input for this guy?

The first sound is exactly like my car, which a buddy has said is definately rod knocking. Mine is not constant, it depends on the load and what rpm. If I hold steady between 3k-4k it's pretty severe, but goes away if I let off the gas (while still in gear).

Guess I'll start looking for a motor.

Regarding the rattling, you may want to check your belts and see if they are not loose and in decent shape. I have a not quite but similiar sound when the car is around the 2.2-2.5k rpms and that's my guess. I hope that's of use to you. Good luck.

Update: haha i found my own post on google!! lol

anyway, the ticking is still there at 148k, just did an oil chnage, was using synthtic oil, it made the ticking louder, i think synthtic oil is alot thinner. using magnatech now. still ticks. the ticking is med loud now, you opon the bonnet and you know its comming from the valve cover, i think its is the cams slapping on the rocker arms? anyway on startup it sounds like crap, metal scrapy sound, but it goes way when the oil pressure shorts itself out. 10w-40 correct? avg temp is 16- 22 around here.

did a power bal test too, didnt make a diff. so im sure the cams are poked, but i notice some chooper bits in my oil, but i dont know if its mine!!! i chnaged my oil at the uni car pit and everyone uses that. so it could of been there from the start.

anyway, tell more if i find this again

yeah sounds just like my 240 the crank had walked so i pulled it apart and rebuilt it
a walked crank is when the journals have gone out and and bent the crank
the piston is actually hittin the head thats what that "rattling" noise is
the clickin is just your valves
thats my 2cents
