ohhh yea, i knew this was coming when i was taking those bolts out, so i started calling local friends before i ever even got down there with the new starter

For future reference, the factory starter of a B14 is identical in most ways to a replacement. the canister (the big part, dunno which ones the silinoid and which ones the starter.....i guess the big part would be the starter) the starter is larger on a replacement. Also at the end of the starter, you'll notice that on a replacement that the gear isn't half shrouded and pre-protruding like the factory one is. By pre-protruding i mean you're able to see into the grooves of the teeth on the gear just by holding the starter up and looking into the gear shrouding.

On the replacement, there is no shrouding, and the gear is not pre-protruded, it is totally incased in a more streamline housing, and when it extends to turn your engine over, it extends completely out of its housing. I'll post pics if i find them. I should've took some with the camera i don't have before i returned the old one.

Heres the factory one, or at least what it more or less looks like (this one is for a GM)

And heres the replacement, or close to it, at any rate, you can see the difference in starter-gear shrouding i was talking about that is absent on the replacement starter (This is a mercedes starter, take away those mounting points by the gear on the end, the places it bolts down on this particular starter, and you'll have what looks like one of ours)

It is my understanding that there are 2 (possibly 3) starters that go in our cars.. here is a link....
http://www.sr20forum.com/general-sr2...i-starter.html

I also don't know if this is true or not but I was told that one works better in a manual trans as opposed to an auto trans. Something about it engages further into the flywheel or something.

ick, starter didn't fix my "no cranking" problem. craptacular. its not fuses, its kinda hard to follow the starter lead wires since i dunno where to begin. never had to do it before let alone in this car.

>< 3days down, still no car. but at least its got a new starter now, the old one was original, and not sounding very nice.

anyone have any ideas what else i can try?

btw, i keep checking this thread for this starter problem. so any suggestions, posting'em there'd be good

Word from the sweaty, soaked, and bleeding: Always check cheapest things first....first of which being fuses, second of which being the little plug that pushes in the button behind the clutch pedal telling your engine the clutch is pressed in and to allow the engine to send a signal to your (possibly) perfect working order starter.

You can usually trust a parts ordering manager, if you know one. Since i work at a shop, thats who i got to deal with, none of the store-front clerks. He made sure he ordered the right part, asked all the right questions, aside form make, model and displacement, he even made sure to ask if it was manual or auto. I'm assuming because yea, one of the probably is a little better for a standard. But having used a shrouded, and a non shrouded starter, i think they both work almost identically. *shrug* whatever gets the damned thing started keeps me happy

Water pump is more of a bitch than the starter. Starter is easy!

Water pump = pita for sure. For ease of it prolly smart to just pull the motor out, considering half the people in this forum have done atleast 2 sr20de swaps lol.

And what the hell is an EGR tube? is that the thing i didnt connect and now struggle with echeck? jk, egr is useless. Thank god eventually echeck wont exist

Will the Bosch SR2262N work for my 98 sr20 5 speed? I dont have a photobucket account so you will have to go to rockauto.com to check out the part. This might help a little ... http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php. It wont let me tag the web page with the part pulled up so just search for starter motor.

thanks for the help.

I was confused by your wording of 'hex bolts'.

I was thinking it was going to need an allen wrench or something. Ferrari4a and I changed my starter out tonight and they were just regular bolts.

Just an FYI for anyone out there that thinks like me(n00b that is.. )

Basically, there are 2 14 mm bolts on top and 2 12mm bolts on the bottom. Take the air filter out and you're good. Get a breaker bar/pipe. Also a lot easier with 2 people to get the starter back on.

Is that v bracket needed? I'm really dreading this job, I know replacing the starter is going to be a pita.

Thanks a ton for this thread. I managed to get my starter out in about 2 hours after reading this. I can't figure out how to get that V bracket out of there, I got it loose and moved it out of the way to get the starter out. I'm going to bolt it back in since that seems to be easier than getting it completely out. I'm not going to bother (or be able) to get all the cables clipped back onto it though. I'm just waiting for my wife to get home from work to finish the job since it's not apparently possible to hold the starter in place and thread the bolts into it by one person.

Great write up and thanks for the tips and pictures... Has anyone bought the supposedly "NEW" Hitachi starters off of eBay?
