Ever hear this from your tranny?

http://www.lp2.net/blackhole/trannyNoise.mp3

That was recorded with the windows up from inside the cabin. The tranny makes that noise, though, much softer, in neutral without the axles moving. The sound goes away completely with the clutch pedal pressed in. It sounds like a drive axle but is coming from the tranny and it never gets worse when turning like an axle would.

It sounds like mine does now. I think its the input shaft bearing on the tranny.

I've seen that mentioned in a few posts. Some claim that a few of the b15 trannies like mine had a bearing problem. My release fork is sticky too, seems they ran out of lube at the factory that day. I'd replace it, but I'm worried that the seat for the bearing is getting sloppy and will never be right again. It just got 100% louder in the last day right after having to drop it a bit hard into 2nd to avoid someone running a red from hitting me at an intersection. Bugger!

If you can make it sound better by pushing the clutch in and sidestepping it so it snaps back up hard, it could just be the TOB rubbing a little bit on the fingers of the Pressure plate.

Greasing the TOB shaft and fork and the connecting shaft that pivots through the case to the outside lever is essential. It can make things very difficult if this is not done.

Dropped the tranny last night. 4.5 hours for a first timer.

The drain plug was still there the fluid looked good too, no metal in it. The PP looks good based on a quick visual inspection. The release fork is pretty sticky and the TOB is a bit sticky too, but working. I can see why clutch engagement was a bit sticky when the tranny was warm. I'll for sure replace the TOB and hopefully the whole clutch kit. I'm cracking the tranny open tonight. No leaking seals, no oil in the bell housing so looking good so far. Hopefully the gears are in good shape and all it needs is some new bearings.

I must say that this car is such a breeze to work on compared to every-other I've bled on.

When good bearings go bad...

My personal crown of thorns for the moment.

Note the naked bearing, about 3 had the crown partially or totally ripped off.

Gears not looking to bad.

The gears look pretty good to me. I did note some scoring on a few, probably where the metal bit of the bearing crown got passed through. They didn't look bad and there doesn't appear to be any play in the socket where the failed input shaft bearing is. Just need to make the decision to replace the input and main shaft bearings or go with a used (non-locking) tranny. My local Nissan dealer wanted about $900 to replace all the bearings, that's with me dropping off the tranny. I got to find me some one who can pull off the old ones and press on some new ones. Forget the needle bearings for now, I gots to get mobile.

Yep! That does suck.

I took good care of the tranny too. It has 108k miles on it and I changed the juice at 40k and again about 10k ago. Most of these bearings fail around 60k so I guess I milked a bit more out of it.

Since I never had any problems getting it to shift and there are no seal leaks, I'm going to (hopefully) cash in on some good karma and just have the input shaft bearings replaced.

Can you explain what is wrong in those pictures... I'm looking but I don't understand what I'm seeing, and I'd like to learn from this... it would be appreciated

i just heard the noise... an it sounds exactly like my problem.. since the crossmember isnt up all the way it vibrates off the chassis an sounds like its coming from your tranny in which it is but not exactly the tranny.. *** dude you dont know how much i hate that fu*kin noise.. it bothers the sh*t outta me

trust me i took out my tranny due to not having 5th gear an thinkin it the noise also was from tranny but no... crossmember is the culprit

Sure. All of the bearings are still there, but the bracket that holds them evenly spaced is busted up.

This is the main rear bearing, the front input shaft bearing is of the same type and should look nice and purdy like this one.

The crown on the front input shaft broke up at the rivet points.

I dropped off the input and mainshafts and bell housing to a Nissan shop who knows me. They actually get interested to see me do my own work and one of the guys races a Spec at the local track. That helps, much less resistance than the other dealer in town was givng me. They quoted about two hours for 4 bearings

Figured I'd throw in a Phantom Grip since the tranny's open, and a new clutch. The stock clutch and PP worked fine for me and I don't plan on going over 170HP or so and not for drag. Maybe a little road racing in the future, maybe (not exactly to win either). I figured the OEM Exedy kit would be fine. Or is that a mistake? I need to stay around $300 to keep the Phantom in the mix.

for 300 you should just spend a few more bucks and get an ACT HD SS.
