Black Top or Red Top?

Hey guys I am new to the forum and unfortunately I do not own a 240 yet. I am inquiring about the car and its engine(s) before I do anything I am going to regret. Now I know that the red top is the S13 engine and puts out 15 less hp than the black top(S14) due to vvt. Now the question I have, which I haven't been able to find is, for power potential are you really that much better off by purchasing the black top in the long run? I know there are other considerations which I am actually not sure of is how many additional sensors, restrictions are there in a black top if any? I know from reading up and from other experiences that if you want the best, you have to pay for it. To me an extra $500 or $800 doesn't seem like much if it will net a significant number of horses in the end, especially if you're looking at a $10,000 project or more in the long run. Any input on the differences between the two SR20DET engines would be much appreciated. Even any further suggestions also.

This is an example of a thread that could be found in the year 2000, when information regarding SRs are kind of scarce.

Fast forward to 6/4/07.

Why is this thread made again, 7 years later?

Well thanks for just making feel dumb and not replying. Well if anyone knows a thread that they could refer me to or a sticky or something, or just simply answer the question that would be helpful.

I am going to help you out bro. The Redtop is cheapper stick with that. Blacktop is a six speed tranny and yes it has a little more power than the redtop, but the Redtop can make the same power as the blacktop. I would say if you are going to get a S14 and have the money for a Blacktop, then get it. If money is a issue Get the a s13 with a redtop. You must remember the Black is a bit newer than the redtop. pm me if u have anymore questions

Just a little off.

S13 You got red top (91-94) and block top (95-98) these are all 5 speed 205 HP$1500-$2500

S14 You got black top only (95-98). These are also 5 speed and if i remember correctly they come with 220 hp Price range $2500-$3000

S15 You got black top again (99-01) looks like S14 motor. comes with bigger injs which are brick brown and has a largre turbo. These are 6 speed and come with about 250HP Price range $3000-$4000

The best motor to get is the black top S13 which is new and is easier to work with and has better flowing head than the S14 and S15. My figures on hp are about correct but dont hold me to it.

Hey guys thanks for the input, I really do appreciate it. I wasn't aware that there was a black top S13 SR20DET. Do you guys have any websites that you recommend for getting these engines, or actually a website that has sr20det's that are already built? Or websites that have a good amount of parts for the sr20 engine and have a good reputation of course.

Hey man. Yeah go with the s13 its cheaper and all det's are able to make good power. Also are you going to pay someone to do all the work or are you going to do it yourself?

THere is plenty of information around the net for you to do it yourself. If your not handy with the tools though, then do get a quality shop to do the work for you.. I stress the word Quality. I would not take my car to anyshop unless I needed some kind of specialized service done. I've had a previous bad experience when I was a wrenching noob. Pretty much eager young ricers are great prey for sh*tty shops. I'm happy that I'm able to tackle most jobs on my own now. I'll never take my car to a shop. If its gonna break i'm gonna break it, I just don't trust mechanics anymore. I hate the feeling when you pay somebody a good chunk of money and then they don't do the job properly.

My suggestion would be to research and gain enough skills where you can do this yourself. Another suggestion have you ever thought of going KA-T? If I was gonna build up a 240 I'd just keep the 2.4 Liters and add a turbo to it. You'll make more power then a stock DET. DET conversions are $$$$ and you only get 205 flywheel power from it, plus a couple more psi out of the T25.

Man that puppy is scared.
