Let's talk about LSD options - JGY? Nismo? Phantom Grip?
Hi,
I'm tearing into my tranny (99 p11) to slap a fidanza and JWT clutch setup in a few weeks.
JGY's friction LSD seems like a bargain at $219. Any opinions? I can't seem to find any reviews or information, the Nismo is a bit expensive, and this is my DD.
As far as I have heard, been told, seen via this forum, JGY is either hit or miss with customer support, etc. People will tell you that they've never ever had a problem with Mr. Young & co. ever ever ever, and others will tell you it's been nothing but trouble since day one.
edit: I am also a fan of the NISMO diff, but, I don't have one... and yes, it's expensive.
$0.02

Not on the forum much lately since neck injury - we'll be back at it soon, babying the n00bies.
JWT S4, HS 6, Home Depot Intake, Hypercoil 2s w/ KYB "GR-Poo", CF Sunroof Delete panel, and other crap - where's my interior?
not trying to bring you down or make you sound stupid. but you do realize you have to do quite a bit more than just drop the tranny right?
but yes the jgy is a phantom grip. 99sel has or had one in his car.

Fair enough!
I mean, cracking the tranny and removing the Diff is not the easiest technical-wise, but when it comes to the brains part of the operation I'm usually fairly well prepared :-D
It is the heavy lifting, broken bolts and rusted crap on my new england cars; the inside of the transmission is nicely protected from that so I figure it shouldn't be too bad with some decent instructions.
So I'm leaning towards putting it in to augment my aging VSLD in my P11 G20t.
BTW Thanks for all the replies on this - Is there any way I can go wrong (Beyond Mr. Garrett-Young's debateable customer service skills and sardonic sense of humour) with the JGY unit?
Anyone find a good link with install instructions?

Reason: Thanks
I had a JGY LSD (Phantom Grip type) put in at 141k miles.
At around 160k miles, it started slipping - only have 1 wheel traction now.
Didn't last very long. The stock LSD was already worn out. Maybe something else
in the trans was bad & wore it out quicker.

I don't think your the only one. My friend installed one (with the stiffer spring) in his Neon and after a season of autocrossing it, the phantom grip just was gripping much. It also felt like an on/off switch when it was new and just didn't feel right IMHO.

If you have an old VLSD, phantom grip or otherwise will restore some of that lost LSD goodness, but not for longterm. If you don't have LSD at all, phantom grip will feel like you now have aged, slipping VLSD. The best way to go, from all that I have heard/read/felt/seen would be to just save and fork over the cash for the Nismo unit.
Well, I ordered one up (The JGY Friction LSD), $219 is super cheap for a LSD upgrade, even if it doesn't do as much as a quaife (unatainable) or a Nismo ($$$). Jason spoke to me in regards to it, he says the springs are stiffer than the Phantom Grip unit, but that he hasn't compared the two directly.
He said the RWD 240sx unit isn't really well suited; he said that it breaks away very easily and that a JDM pumpkin/axles with factory LSD is a better deal for not a whole lot more money ($4XX) dollars.

If your lucky, like me, you can get a S15 Helical LSD with axles for around $400... I wish it was that cheap for the B13
Personally I have never had a problem working with JGY. I've ordered from them 3 times I believe. Each time someone got on the phone and talked to me about what I was buying.
It is amazing the variance in customer experience.
a bit off topic ... :
I'm a little dissapointed in JWT though, I bought their pressure plate for $225 from them directly, then I see its $199 on everything g20 ... what gives with it being more expensive not direct?
So I have received everything and the install date is set - We start tearing into the vehicle October 6th Saturday, leaving sunday in case things get a bit crazy and/or out of hand. Install materials include:
JWT PP with the 00' SE disc
8.5lbs Fidanza Flywheel
JGY Friction type LSD
MT-90 Gear Oil
Throwout bearing

Reason: JGY, not JWT
Well, we completed the job, it took about 10 hours more than expected.
Thoughts:
Clutch is great, barely any more pedal effort and it grabs like crazy if you get on it, feels like stock though once you get used to it.
Friction LSD - I feel a bit more in control on the corners at high speed and torque steer is down on hard starts. Is this accurate of what I should be feeling or am I just wishfully thinking? ANYWAY, make sure you're paying attention when you take apart your transmission, holy moses that was unnerving.
Fidanza 8.5lbs. flywheel: totally awesome. Not hard to adjust to driving with at all. I expected more of a learning curve. Don't get me wrong, an uninitiated driver will stall the car the first 3 take offs I'm sure, but it is easy to drive and I can really feel the extra go. First and second gear just get away from me so quickly. Matching RPMs on shifts is fun and I feel more in control of the engine's speed, it feels like my old 1.6 GA16DE.
