Should be the same cams for turbo non turbo motors, unless its for the gti-r. But you have the RR, I don't know much about that.

I dynoed at 133whp 123lbs/tq. and all i had was header and exhaust... so something is deffinatly wrong lol

yeah...not sure if the HKS cams are for RR engines or not...i've got the P11GTLE so is a RR engine...think the P10's were non RR...and i know the GTiR engines are solid lifters but in the big cam list there is a seperate section for the GTiR cams....anyone have any more info on them...i've used the search button but to no avail...

yup...definitely something wrong...

oh and the MAF is stock so that can't be the issue...and i cannot imagine for a second that i'm maxxing it out...could get a voltmeter on it i suppose (whats the max 5.13v's or something?!) but i very much doubt at WOT i'm sucking too much air for it to cope...

i just don't want it to be a compression issue...lol...of all the things i needed right now...an engine change wasn't one of them...

but....if it is...it's still running pretty well now, theres no gunk at the top end so water and oil are not mixing (actually it looks emmaculate top end) so might give me a chance to build up a top class motor from the ground up and really make something special...who knows...might be a blessing in disguise...lol

Wait, so you could possibly be running non-RR cams in the RR motor? I think that is your issue right there

I've only heard of JWT S3RR cams that work in the RR's.

Can you install the stock cams, see if you feel the difference while driving...

thats the thing...i bought the car with the cams already installed, so i don't actually know what is under there...it's only what i've been told from previous owners...

i have dyno printouts from before which show much higher outputs and they have been fitted for quite a while now...i'm pretty sure the problem would have been arisen long before now if that was the issue..

the only other thing is that it could have piper cams fitted...thats the only other RR cams i know of...and it was bullsh*t about the HKS ones...lol...i know for definite that it hasn't got JWT's in...lol...

i'll whip the VC off tommorow and have a good look...

Right...i couldn't wait till tommorow...so just been and taken the cover off...

couldn't see any HKS branding on the Cams...or piper for that matter...

just had code of 53J on each of the cams and then a sportscam stamp on them...

nothing else...anyone have a clue who or what these cams are?? My digicam is bust or i would be sticking some pics up...

sportscam IIRC are HKS cams.

I don't believe these are any good on RR motors. Choaderboy and SR20Turbofreak are cam gurus in my book, they would tell you for sure. IIRC, only JWT makes cams for RR motors.

I'm not sure if 53J is the cam code or if it's the same for all of the cams for our engines... check this out... this is my High Port Intake Cam... same number!

i'd assume if they were regrinds then they would still have the 53J mark on though wouldn't they...

yeah...so just need to confirm what brand the SportsCam logo is from...

if it is the HKS and they are not designed for RR engines then i've obviously got one helluva problem...(although they have been in the motor 60K plus miles...

i hate not knowing stuff like this...is genuinely annoying!!!

EEEHHHHH....?!?!?! So why have i been told Piper/HKS...everything but JWT...

this is so confusing...

oh...and i still need to know if these are S3's or S3R's...does anyone know how to tell the difference between them??

cheers

Thank you Swiss for posting such a great detailed post

Right...i have got a friend coming round tommorow with his digi cam and i'll whip the VC off again then and get a picture for you guys...

and i did a compression test today (and thank the funking lord!!) i got

191, 195, 192, 197 psi...so not too bad! At least no cylinders are down on one another which is ace!

So other things...

cam timing i assume...so how the bloomin hell do i go about checking that? Going to need a proper walk through on that as i haven't got a clue and not going to pretend i do...lol

oh and another thing...not sure if this is ever so relevant or not...but just listening to the engine idling today and it sounds (i know it's hydraulic so don't pounce) but tappety at the top end...which seems to come and go slightly...

i know the timing chain is rattly on startup but that does die down after a couple of seconds...but this sounds like more from under the VC...

common with cams or am i now just hearing things and paranoia has set in...

just talking to a more well versed SR20 friend than myself, he was saying the top end noise could be due to air in the lifters which could also be the reason for the loss in power...

basically not getting enough lift with them being spongy...

before i take the cams out...any better way of confirming this theory?!?

I would get yourself a new Timing Chain Tensioner. I had some rattling on startup... when I took it apart I saw in what shape it was

Link and awful pictures
