Home Made Tranny Re-Enforcement.

I know others have done this before, but I'm not sure if any of them have posted it for fear of being labeled "Ghetto." But since I am a bit ghetto, I'll post it up in the hopes that it will save some of you guys and gals out there a few trips to the junk yards searching for trannys. If you are installing your second tranny or simply have yours out for some other reason (clutch) theres a simple mod you can do to strengthen up your tranny quite a bit. Have someone bead blast the voids around where the half shaft goes into the tranny and then fill them with metal epoxy. It is rated at 5000 degrees and 15000 PSI before failing. Here are some pics.

Now I know what your all saying, "Why would I do all this if it's just gonna crack again?!" since mine obviously has a crack in it. Well heres the skinny folks, I have a DET swap that does about 250WHP and I raced on this tranny for almost two years. I raced at the track, on the street and did burnouts just for fun and this mod held. What finally cracked it was a 6k RPM drop on FULL slicks on the sticky sticky launch pad at the track when it was 80 degrees outside! And even then it was a small crack. I drove the car for an additional 6 months while only filling it twice.

Since most of us do not race on slicks and/or do not have the cash to put out on a B15/P11 tranny, this is an affordable, effective solution. I hope this will help some of my fellow budget racers keep their SR20's out there on the road and not in the garage.

Dave

Exactly.. Only thing is they are becoming a bit hard to find. Everyone and their grandmother is snatching them up from the salvage yards.

What types of metal epoxies are out there? seems like something simple enough that I would do and I will be pulling my flywheel of this weekend.

Just make sure to cover up the input seal and the hole so that none of the epoxy gets into the internals of the tranny or you may be hosed. For the time and money involved, it's probably the best/most cost effective upgrade you can do.
