I'm at my wits end here. I bought a 93.5 G20 with a blown engine and swapped the engine from my 91 NX2000 into it. The G20 was an auto and the NX was a manual. I transplanted the entire wiring harness from the blown G20 engine to the NX. I'm using the computer from the G20. Here's the problem:
The car overheats in idle sitting still. It takes about 15 minutes but the temp gauge goes past H. Revving the engine seems to help for a while but it reaches a point where that doesn't even help. Having the heat on full helps but doesn't stop it from happening.
I've replaced the water pump, radiator, hoses, and have put three termostats in it. Adjusted the timing, bled the air out more times than I can count. The compression test shows 145 at each cylinder hot and cold (plus or minus 5psi). I've used the NAPA block test kit and I'm pretty sure it is not showing a head gasket leak.
Right now there is no thermostat in it and even at 20degrees it is overheating.
The odd thing is that the radiator fans do not come on and stay on, they come on for a 10-20 seconds and then off. I would expect that they would be on full when the temp exceeds a certain point. I did measure the voltage on the ECU temp sensor and it tracks with what the dash gauge is showing. Also swapped out the ECU with another used one and had the same problem. I know the fan circuit is working because they do come on.
Guys, I'm about ready to shoot this car - what would give me more satisfaction, a rifle or a shotgun?
use the g20 temp meter sensor and all your worries will go away. i had the same exact problem. youre better off just buying it from infiniti brand new for $16.
you've got to be kidding me. Now I can't remember if I swapped out the sensors or not. I'm going to shoot myself if it ends up being a $16 part Oh well, all the other parts needed replacing after 175,000 anyway...
yup. when i did my det swap, the local nissan dealership gave me the wrong gauge temp sender so my car was shooting to the hot point right away, but i had the correct temp sensor for the ecu so he car was always ok. i got the right one(i had to use a b14 gauge temp sensor since you and i have the infamous 93.5 g20 and little things are different on the half year model) and its been all good since. you have the correct temp sensor(ecu), but not the correct temp sender(for the gauge needle).

i wouldent think the sensor would be diff. when i did my swap mine over heated all the time. So i thought. i knew the engine i was using was good. but for some reason the temp sensor got mest up and it read hot. i got a new one from advance it was like 12 dollers and my problems went away.
you should have known that nothing was wrong with your car. i dont think out engine last that long while running to the H... one other reason that i knew i was not over heating is because i stuck my finger in the antifreeze and it didnt burn my finger off.. matter of fact the top of the radiator didnt even explode when i did it so i knew better......

Mine did that as well when I had the wrong temp sensor in it. The gauge would read HOT but you could pop the cap and stick your finger in luke warm coolant. I then got the correct sensor that went with the corresponding cluster that I had in my car and it solved everything.
Well that's what it was. I just got in from the garage and everything is good now. It should be with basically a brand new cooling system I guess I was too afraid to let it overheat to be sure it wasn't. I was pretty sure the coolant was boiling at one point but I guess it was just air bubbles now. Anyway, thanks for the help everyone! Now I need to get some parts...
Well I've got to say that I feel pretty stupid for not tripple checking that but like I said, I saw other symptoms and I checked the part at a place (can't remember which) and they said same part number from the 91 nissan to the 93.5 infiniti. Probably meant a 93. Oh well.
BTW, does anyone know how can I actually test my coolant temp sensor in order to know if it is working properly on idle? In the mornings, I have to turn the start key about 6-8 times to get the car awake .. idle goes awful until somehow, just starts working ok. Just happen in the mornings though.. or cold conditions..

^^well i had the same problem. ok, i still have the same problem. my starter is going out on me, i have a spare sitting in the passenger floor for about a month now just dont have time to get it in. but my car idled like crap when cold and its because i had a hose come off the intake(i.e. major boost leak) so until it warmed up i had to keep giving it gas or i t would die. check for any leaks my friend.
I am having this EXACT problem. My 93.5 overheats (according to cluster). Revving helps a little, AC fans help alittle. Cluster still will read hot. I just swapped in a motor from a 92 SE-R.
Looks like i was supposed to swap the temp sensors too.

i love this way of thinking.
