Engine loses power, dies, starts right back up, but wont keep running till it cools
I just recently tried to drive a 93 infiniti g20 back to Colorado from SLC Utah. Car ran fine in city, but started acting funny in Provo. It died when i pulled into a parking lot to park. Seemed to run fine before that. So, I went ahead and tried to go over soldier sumit,, big mistake. Higher I got, the less power it made, till finally I had to keep it in 3rd gear at about 4000 rpm to make it over the top. Any less rpm and it would start to stumble. Once over the top, I put it into 5th, and let the rpms drop,, sinse its now downhill,, and it just lost power and died. Starts right back up, but would not run for 30 seconds before dieing again. Sooooo, I rented a car hauler,, and towed it home. Havent run it yet after getting home. Oil is fine,, coolant is fine, no mixing of the 2 so I dont think its head gasket. Power seemed fine at first,, but it was down on power when I took off from provo. Funny thing is it starts very easy every time???? 160000 miles,, all stock. Looks like it wasnt maintained all that well because the engine is filthy dirty. Trans and clutch seem fine. All lights, radio and electricals work. I was gonna get a couple cans of degreaser, and clean up the engine before messing with it to fix. Any suggestions on where to start? BTW, I did search, and there were a ton of different threads,, and none with this same exact problem..Oh, and another thing,,, the temp gauge was reading normal all the way up the pass,, never blew steam,, no OBVIOUS indications of overheating. Last SE-R I had required a new fuel pump because it keept dumping at the most randome moments,, but it would require a days sit before starting again.
More searching reveals,, grounding MAF, cleaning the IACS, cleaning the MAF, checking for vacume leaks, replacing alternator, distributer, full tune up, fuel filter, fuel pick up, vacume canister, fuel pump, ECU, and a bunch more possible problems. Anybody think they can narrow it down for me? In the meantime, I am gonna clean and tinker with it,, but I cannot afford to just start replacing every thing under the hood. Gonna take me a while to trust the car now,, baby steps... first to the carwash and back,, mabey to work...
Made a short test drive this evening. I let the engine idle up till it got warm. Started very easy, idled fine, revs up fine, warmed up quickly. Took off for a little sprint action round the block, and it seems low on power compared to a similar mileage 91 stock SE-r. Granted the SE-R weighs a bunch less, but still seems like this g20 should have more poop in 1st and second gear. Lugs down well, trundling along slowly in 4th and 5th it just goes without complaint,, but dosent pull very positively again,, compared to a stock 91 ser. Seems like the warmer it got, the lower the power got, but not a hundred percent sure ,,just seems like it. Temp gauge isnt going crazy, just normal. More testing and time will hopefully tell.
I just could not get past the starts right up but will not keep running when hot issue. Fact is, its got to be a cooling issue. No matter what the gauge sais,, its acting just like an overheated engine. So, I popped the hood today, fired her up, tried the AC, hmmm, one of the cooling fans should kick on when ac is on, but its not happening. So, the car warms up, and still no cooling fans coming on. Temp gauge reads normal, but I think thats got to be wrong. I will investigate temp sender, and cooling fan temp switch ASAP. If I can get the engine sorted out, then its just minor cosmetics to make this little rocket really nice!
