99G20T SR20DET SWAP PROJECT

This discussion originally took place in the newbie area here;
http://www.sr20forum.com/new-members...name-tune.html
I decided to relocate this thread, sorry if its not in the right place...

Anyway, Nismo Chris confirmed my worst fears of rod knock, heres the link to the video if you'd like to see.

So heres the story,
This sucks hard, My dad gave me this 99 G20T NA A/T only last august when I got my license, I wish he told me it had oil leaks but This is totally my fault, I had no idea I should be checking oil so often. I was previously driving a 91 mustang LX which im painting as we speak so I can drive it tomorrow (I was going to put a 5.0L Turbo in it)

Now I guess I'll turbo swap the G, It's probably way more reliable anyway and it is alot nicer. Makes me greatfull I got the LX running in good shape when I did too! Maybe god was sending me a sign to turbo the G...

Anyways, I agree with your diagnosis whole heartedly and I've read that replacing the crank/bearings and potentialy others is very expensive, I assume this is also true.

On the note of my new project I have a few questions, if you have any tips or advice as well its appreciated...

If I bought a motor would it be best to clean all parts and replace all gaskets while its out, or is the original assembly worth keeping as is?

Ive seen some sr20 de's for around 400 and some are over 700 at tiger japan.
I would rather turbo swap while I'm at it, I've seen some for about $1000

I'll be on here for a while, I'll pick up an engine in the next few weeks, I hope you all look forward to my swap blog, I know I'll have alot of questions, I'll post alot of pictures and questions lol

Maybe someone can tell me whats involved as I've heard alot of upgrades are nessicary to turbo the DE, like new rods/pistons/exhaust/intakes/intercoolers

Does anyone have a checklist and also a torque list?

I know theres alot to do to turbo a non-turbo'd engine but can I drop in a DET instead or is a drivetrain or tranny upgrade required, I've also heard that you can break an axel on a front wheel drive if its turbo'd if you drive it too hard.

Any feedback appreciated.

Whoa, I'm doing a sr20det avenir swap in my friends 99g20t now. I'd also like to know if there are some neccessary modifications for this to go in no problem. I know that highport to lowport throttle cable mounting points have to be changed so it can be properly adjusted to actually open to WOT. And that the egr equip doesn't get used anymore. Any one else know of any other things to make a note of. I've done a few swaps and helped on a det we basically took all the way apart(not the block/head internally but everything else ) to put it all back together to got it running decent(thanks forum member it was aquired from). So I'm not a newb to sr20's but this is my first g swap. Anything to speed up the process to ride and drive is appreciated.

I know where there is an SR20DET pulled from a P10. Too bad it's in Houston.

I wonder how much shipping is, who has it, how much is it selling for and do you know what comes with it? or who has it?

I havent purchased anything, I'm trying to get a list together of everything I need for the swap. My car needs new shocks or control arms too, not sure which yet. and it needs a paint job, I'll be working on the body/paint over the next few weeks leading up to the engine swap.

anyway I'm gonna keep looking for a guide or something, when I googled this page is the first link LOL

thanks guys.

Mods:

Swain Tech coating on manifold and turbine housing
Extrude Hone of manifold and turbine housing
UR underdrive pulleys
JWT aluminum flywheel
JWT pressure plate and 2000 Sentra clutch disc (HD)
Not great but serviceable downpipe
JWT ECU
Small FMIC and piping with recirc valve

Hell, the mods alone would cost what I want for the whole package. I'll even throw in a copy of the SCC article.
If you like this, PM me your email and I'll forward it to the owner.

BUMP

had a financial hichoughpfph idk how to spell that and my space key sometimesdoesnt work.

anyway, bought a bunch of woodworking tools from my uncle cause he was moving now i have a wood shop too lol deadly.

so, I got demotivated cause my car is not manual so my list of mods grows greater. I am new at this stuff but I have friends and you guys to help me out!

I have increased my budget and it will obviously take me longer than i though to begin with...

I guess there was a guy at race city here in calgary with a G and he put an sr20det from a bluebird in, saideverything bolts right in just need the ecu from det and harness from sr20, im guessing his car was already stick shift.

mine is auto, has sentimental value since i got it from my dad when i got my license. so i'd really like to keep this car, but i want it to be faster.
i wasgoing to just put a stock motor in but after hearing of buddy at race city with the turbo swap he did, i can no longer resist. its going to take a while cause of home reno's and I'll have to get another job to fund the project which will cost me alot of time for the swap and reno's lol...

so heres what i need.

I need to convert from auto to manual, so i have to move some pedals and add in a clutchpedal, pretty big mod im sure but I doubt im not the first one to do this and i have all the tools except welders, which idk if i'll need...

I need an sr20DET Bluebird engine.

QUESTION; This is probably a stupid question and i think the answer is no but... Does the AWD tranny from the Bluebird bolt in or do i need to find a different Manual transmission to purchase? if so, what transmission do i look for?

QUESTION; somone saidnot to buy a JDM engine... where else would i buy one? does anyone have any recomendations based on price obviously and experience so i dont get screwed around.

I'll need to put in a new fuel pump, this isnt hard ive done it before on my mustang...

I want underdrive pullies.

When I get the engine I was planning on rebuilding it and putting in new gaskets and seals.

I need an ECU with the engine, and can use existing Harness.
I dont own a lift but ill rent one twice, to remove oldengine and put newone in.

I'll be parting out the old engine and keeping some parts for spares...

I'll most likely install a bigger rad.

ive heard of a 91' intake cam mod but im pretty sure thats for N/A Engines.

I'm a fast learner and good with my hands(well thatswhat my GF tells me)

the car needs other major work like a paint job which i will tackle one day as well since i need a compressor for my reno's anyways...
it needs a new front bumper, and headlight mounting bracket.

I havent pulled out an engine since highschool and we just cut everything off when we did that one, this time i need to save all the hoses and harnes.
I'm very new at this, hopefully I can get a few Vets to help me out on this one, if anyone wants to see what im working with from the start i can post pictures.

if there are any other upgrades i might need to do to say axel or suspension please let me know. if anyone has any tips i would really appreciate it! im saving up to buy the engine and all the parts ill need. i only have about 20% of engine saved up sofar but i havent got another job yet.

well this will be a fun swap, cant wait to take me pops for a spin when its done.

ill continue my research and hope for some help from everyone here at sr20forum.

thanks in advance.

Can somone please tell me what engines and transmissions are compatible? I have to convert to manual 5 speed anyways.

I'm getting geared up to do the swap early in 2011 and I want to start getting parts together now.

I know the sr20det blubird and pulsar and the gti-r engines work, im not sure if any years in particular though. The bluebird engine seems like the best value in terms of dollars per hp but I also know this engine comes with an AWD tranny that will not work.

There seems to be engines all over the internet like at jdm engines and what not, but it seems hard to find a transmission since im not sure what I need.

if anyone has any tips on where to get parts that can ship to canada or if anyone has any resources please advise, its hard to find google results for this topic since it's so specific.

thanks in advance.
