Engine died, won't restart

I'm at the end of my rope on this one. I've searched and read threads on the forum and still haven't fixed it. So.

91 Sentra SE-R. I was on an on-ramp last Sunday when the motor just sputtered out and refused to restart. I can't for the life of me figure out why. It cranks great, and sometimes it stumbles like it's just about to fire up on its own, but then doesn't. The spark plugs were wet when I pulled them, so it's getting fuel.

Parts I replaced before the problem:
  • Spark plugs
  • Spark plug wires
  • Distributor cap
  • Rotor

Parts I replaced after the problem started:
  • Coil
  • Ignitor
  • Fuel filter

Just before it died, I changed the oil. It's all still in there. And it's clean. I also filled it up with premium rather than regular, since I was about to autocross it (it died on the way to the event). Maybe I got a tank of bad gas? Other than that, I'm out of ideas. Got any?

disconnect the fuel line before the filter, ram fuel line into a container that can hold gas and not disolve, turn ignition on, inspect fuel in container, if no fuel comes out something is wrong with your pump or wiring

If you don't see anything wrong with the fuel, pour a little on the ground, light it on fire. If it smokes a lot it's probably contaminated. If it doens't catch on fire that's your problem. Get ready to make the gas station pay for your repair bills. Pay yourself $65 bucks an hour labor Tell them you need a new fuel pump, injectors, filter, and you need the gas tank emptied and cleaned. That's if you wanna be a jerk. If not just empty the tank and fill with fresh gas and replace the filter. If it's the gas's fault they are liable.

Lots of fuel pressure and I can hear the pump when I turn the ignition on, so it's fine. I burned a little - it burned well, with some black smoke. Some other gas I had in a can burned the same way. So I guess the gas is good, and I'm really out of ideas...

How's the MAF look? Try regrounding it. See if that aids any. It couldn't hurt.

Found it. The problem was hidden under the distributor cap cover. The set screw for the rotor had worked its way loose inside the cap, bounced around, and wreaked havoc, including a couple of holes punched in the side of the cap. Wish I'd bothered looking before buying the other parts, but I'd only just replaced the cap and rotor - what could possibly go wrong? Ah well - it's an easy fix, and now I have an all new ignition system.

Well, I thought that would fix it, but no! The engine cranks but still won't fire, even with a new, intact cap and rotor! And unlike before, when it felt like it was trying to fire, now I don't even get that - it just cranks and cranks and cranks. I have spark and fuel in all 4 cylinders, and nothing blocking the air. Could something in the distributor itself have gotten out of alignment and thrown the timing off? I'm really at a loss...

How tough are these distributors? Could the bolt bouncing around inside the cap and subsequent strain of removing the stuck rotor from the shaft have damaged the distributor, resulting in my current problem? That could throw off the timing...

Fixed, really this time! It was the distributor. I think something had knocked its shaft way out of alignment, throwing the timing way off. I cranked the engine to a point where the rotor bolt was easily accessible from the top to remove it from the old dizzy. When I put the new one on, I had to crank the motor another 90* or so to bring its shaft to the same point! Reassembled the rest and it fired right up on the first try.

So now that it has a new fuel filter and entire ignition system, it's running great!
