periodic loss of power

Hey all,
i have a 1990 primera running a sr20de and the damn thing is messing with me.quite often when i engage first gear and start accelerating it just completely looses power and acts like i just turned it off for a moment then i get response again and it repeats this a few times, all in the space of a few seconds.sometimes happens in other gears but mostly in first and almost always at low revs and also when changing gears. If i floor it and get to high revs this doesnt happen but i imagine the police would have a problem with me flooring it everywhere i go.

Was reading the technical help forum and got the idea to go cleaning, spark plugs are fine, distributor was not in good shape very grubby but after a clean its great now(the cars actually has a bit more pep since i cleaned up the dizzy). But seeing as the dizzy clean did nothing for my new problem but helped in other ways im guessing its not an electrical issue.

My best guess is something to do with the air intake causing the issue.Removed the air flow meter and its clean as a whistle but there is a sealed component attached to it so i have no idea if thats the issue.

It kind of reminds me of a idle issue some cars get where at idle the car revs itself to like 1500rpm and then back down to normal over and over.Except my idle is fine.

i can replace just about anything on a car my problem is diagnosis.

i hope this information is descriptive enough to give someone with more knowledge than i an idea of what i need to do to fix my issue.
Thanks

Can you replace the distributor with another one just to see if your runs better?
