Help: Aircond Compressor Clutch Issues

Hi guys, I've just made an introduction at the new members area. This is a very informative forum. Been learning alot. Now I'm hoping to get some help as well. Pardon me for being so quick to ask for help.

I am hoping to get some technical advice from you guys over here as I'm not much of a grease monkey myself. Here's the problem about a week ago there was this loud knocking sound coming from the engine and after a short drive(30min drive) there was smoke that begin to come out of the engine bay area, however engine temperature remained normal. When i got this checked out by a foreman near my area i was told that my aircond compressor clutch had given way hence the smoke and burn smell. While in the hunt of a replacement second hand compressor i continued to use the car for short distance drives. However, in due time the altenator belt had snapped as well. My suspicion is that the heat from the compressor clutch caused this. Now the altenator is not chargin the battery because of this.

As a student my main concern is to get this car back to running condition at the LEAST possible cost. I do not inted to keep the car for long (planning an upgrade after graduation). My question is, is it possible to run the car without the a/c compressor/clutch. Would i be able to maybe use a smaller belt and bypass the compressor altogehter hence aircond wont be working. Or will this mean that the altenator will not be able to run as well.

The mechanic ive previously sent the car to for a diagnosis says he doesnt think its possible. But I have my doubts on this because he seems more interested in earning as much $$$ from me so I reckon this would not be the most economically viable course of action for him.

Any suggestions from you guys are most welcomed thanks!

Cheers,
JDY

Yes it is you can goto the auto parts store and get a belt for the car and make sure you ask them for one with out a/c. ill do a search for you and try to find the part number.
