Crank position sensor

Redid my clutch, and have the CPS expoxied into a b13 trans (mine's a 96) and its sending cel...never did this before at all, and I've had the same setup for years. My question is, what actually happens when the sensor fails or triggers CEL? It if doesn't retard the timing or anything I'm not concerned. Someone help me out. TIA

what I readed about de CPS (accordingly to ESM): ECM do not use the CPS signal for nothing....it's just for OBDII protocol.
