93' NX2000 SR20 Transmission Grinds

Okay, I just got my car back together after tearing it apart this winter for big plans that were shot down because of getting fired...

But here's my dilemma. I'm having a grinding noise when slowly letting out the clutch in reverse, and when I try and downshift and I don't perfectly rev match. I saw another thread from 2005 that wasn't resolved on a similar issue. The described feeling when it grinds is as if somebody is taking a grinder to the shifter from under your car.

Of all the possibilities that I could think of, I haven't really gotten a resolution.

When I took my car out 3 weeks ago, I had just finished putting a Fidanza Flywheel in, and a Spec Stg. 1 clutch kit. After driving it for about 600 miles with horrible vbrations and the downshift grinds, I dropped the tranny to see what was up. The ToB was still in great condition, clutch disk looked nearly untouched, and there were a few burns oh the Fidanza friction plate.

The only somewhat alarming problem I came across when it was apart is that the outside of the pressure plate was hitting on the transmission(Lower left side when looking towards the input shaft). I've found multiple cases of this, which are however remedied by letting the PP grind away at it until it stops scraping, which it did. So, I put the transmission back on, still baffled by what may be causing the grinding.

Since then, clutch has significantly broken in better and doesn't chatter as bad. However, I noticed the other day while under my car, that my driver side CV axle didn't seem as if it were in all the way. I took out the axle and tried re-seating it, and for the life of me, I couldn't get it in all the way. There seems to be about 1/2" of space left to go, and when I have it to that point, there's back and forth play in it of about 1/3" or so. I've tried twisting, turning, beating, bashing, and anything you could think of to get it the rest of the way in, it just won't. I've replaced the drive side CV axle MANY times before, and I've never had this issue.

Note: I have correct amout and type of gear lube in, my shift linkage isn't bent, the bushing on it isn't worn, ToB is new and appeared in perfect condition, input shaft does NOT have play, and I have no forward driving/shifting problems except downshifting.

Hope this gives enough information.. Lol

I am not sure about the transmission sounds pretty strange to me I have pulled many of them apart but it was mostly for third gear dieing. But the Cv shaft I have alwasy had trouble with the drivers side one and it doesn't sound like it is going in all the way but if it wasn't in all the way it would dump the gear oil out so that would be a good indication to see if it is in or not.

It's not dumping gear lube out, though it IS dripping very slowly. I can see a few drops below the seal, and the seal is brand new with no rips or tears in it. After 3k miles I was maybe 1/3qt low, which doesn't mean much when draining thick liquids.

All the gears and syncros are in good shape, excluding second. Though it's nothing major. I might have to put my old clutch kit and flywheel back in again.. Though I'm not sure that's the problem, but that's the only thing I've changed. I'll probably drop the tranny later this week, supposed to be 55f! Heat wave in Minnesota!

My clutch cable is tightened all the way up. I realize I need a new one, but I don't see how that would cause grinding. The motor mounts are in fair condition, they're cracked in some spots, but hell.. they're the same as last year.

The only thing I did was replace the front motor mount. The insert was missing for over a year until I noticed it. =O

the only thing about the cable would be if it is not completely disengaging the clutch you wouldn't notice it much up shifting and if the cv shaft isn't all the way in it would leak out much more than that and it would probably have popped out by now I had that happen to me once and I have been running a fidanza flywheel for about 4 years not and have never had any issues with it so I wouldn't worry about switching that out.

I'm fairly certain the clutch is disengaging all the way. I had a problem with that last year with some crappy clutch kit I bought. I have no problems getting into gears at all, it's just a grinding as I let the clutch engage slowly.
