clutch plate not fitting spline?

I've a 96 ser manual trans non-lsd.

the springs broke in the clutch plate.

i bought a clutch kit on e-bay. while trial fitting the clutch plate onto the spline i noticed it didn't fit or did the pilot bearing, to small?

i thought maybe they sent me the wrong kit but i went to autozone and they had the one just like the kit i ordered. the old and new clutch plate have 18 notches. my car didn't have the pilot bearing in the crank and i found no help in my haynes book.

i bought the car used and the seller said the motor was replaced, don't know what year the engine came from.

thanks for any ideas or help. pete

The pilot bearing is irrelevant. The tranny input shaft doesn't reach in there.
