VLSD rebuild?

Anybody ever heard of rebuilding or getting new fluid for a VLSD?

Is the fluid some high tech Nissan only stuff or what?

Could you drill and tap a drain plug in it if you had the fluid?

It seems like there would be a market for this considering a lot of these things don't work anymore and the cost of a replacement is considerable.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Nissan Motorsports catalog lists a more aggressive VLSD. Part # 38411-MBLSD. This unit only works in VLSD trannies.

They also have one for the non-lsd trannies.

That is a good question. I have a spare tranny with 5th gear pop out and I could use a better LSD. One day I'll pull it apart and see if I can do something about it.

Bump from the dead I want to know if this is possible, and where one would source fluid.

There is a ball bearing that is punched into the housing to seal it up from the factory. I have never seen or heard of somone replacing the viscous fluid in one, or if its even possible to source a suitable fluid, factory or 'upgraded'.

Not to mention if there is internal parts that would need to be replaced but you simply can't just take it apart as its welded together.

If you did replace with new, you may as well go aftermarket as i can't imagine them being cheap!

The VZ-R N1 uses a different VLSD part from what i recall, which could be similar to a nismo upgraded VLSD version.

I know there was talk of doing this years ago on the mailing list, but I don't remember anyone actually trying it.

Exactly. I'm not trying to get a new factory vlsd. That's not really smart. But If I can buy some high viscosity silicon fluid, then "rebuilding" one should be as easy as drain and refill!

I could also bump up the viscosity and make it much more performance oriented by forcing it to "lock up" faster.

Since the plates are not supposed to touch, unless you have totally destroyed your vlsd there should be no to little internal wear on the plates.

Driving in the sloshy snow today reminded me of how long it takes for the VLSD to kick in. Sure it stays hot for a few minutes but after it cools off it takes a second or two to kick in again. You still pull to the side as it warms up. The 6 speed HLSD swap is the way to go

I added a JGY friction type to my stock B15 VLSD as well, which helped but LSD that kicks in late is almost worthless.

Get some Redline heavy shockproof and just wait till the tranny warms up before you cane it. Like Eric said it came up and nobody ever did it.
