Squeeze an SR20DET into an 280Z???

I am going to get an 1974 Datsun 280Z, for about $2500, in near mint condition.

How difficult would it be to swap in an SR20DET?
I would probabaly get an S13 RWD SR20DET.... maybe an S14 if i can afford it, but would this engine match the engine mounts on the 280Z chassis?

Would I have to get another transmission or can I use the original one? Also... what other mods would I have to do? New driveshaft? Axels? Fuel Pump?

I would purchase a complete package from After-Dark Tuning and I was curious if I could do it myslef, without alot of modifications?

You would for sure need the S13 or S14 setup with the S13 or S14 tranny to go with it. Most likely a custom drive shaft or the 280Z drive shaft modified. You will need the wiring harness and all off of the S13 and an ECu to run it all. Good luck! I am sure there are other forums that can help more. We don't deal with the old Z-cars here much, or even 240sx for that matter.

$2500 seems kinda high for a 74 datsun 280z. it doesnt really have the heritage like the 240z's.

I once got a price quote from a Z specialty shop for a putting an sr20det into a 280z. My understanding of it in the itemization of the quote was fabrication of motor mounts and the cross member. Other then that, it looked straight forward.

the price is kinda high... but I am buying it from some old grandma... and it only has 63,000 miles on it!
I'm tellin ya.. mint condition.

But when they gave you a price quote... how much as the installation? Maybe i'll just go to a shop and drop it off rather than putting in over a few weekends in my summer.

Another thing ontop of that... its an Automatic
I figured I could throw in an Manual tranny that I can get from www.car-parts.com for only $300 bux.....
So if I can't afford the SR20DET than I will install teh manual tranny.....

Just wondering if anyone has converted from an automatic to manual to an 280Z or ZX.. maybe you can give me a few pointers and the parts I may need.

I have searched ZCar.net and I assume thats probably where I will get all of my info from... but you never know.. maybe someone will know

If you're serious about a motor swap into an old Z car I think there are better options than an SR20.

240Zs rock

The word "Squeeze" need not be in this thread for you can fit 2 Sr20's inline inside a S30 chassis. I am putting an 1998 S14 engine into my 71 240Z. I have everything i need but the wiring schmatics for the 1998 SR20. As you all know the 98 is differnt from the older S14 engines with a white ECU clip instead of Blue. Does anyone know where i can find a 98 Sr20 wiring manual or cheet sheet? i need the pin outs for starter, ignition, ECU power and ECU ground. Everything elts i am keeping stock 240Z wiring and Switches for fans and the pump. Apexi Speed meter will be my simple fix for no speedo. and tach with a Safc2 untill i get my loot together for the power FC. Thanks for any help you can give on the wiring business.

There was no turbo option on fairlady cars untill the ZX.

Actually '74 was a 260Z ... As far as a swap, the SR is about the best engine to swap into a Z , way less weight and alot more power, but it isnt gona be a drop in by any means ... Full custom and wirring galore !! .... You would be better off just droping a Small block Chevy/Ford into it .... way less work and way less wirring !!! My dads 240Z was an auto. and he swaped a 5spd into it , very easy if you have the parts needed from a donor car ...

Ugh, dont put that fart in his head. Hicks have butchered this historic car enough. Do Mr K a fav and either leave the L24, L26 or L28 under the hood, or put some new nissan love into it (RB,SR,VG...).

HOLY SH!T!

This thread came back to BITE me in the ass! LoL!

No... Squeeze is a God awful word to use.... the engine bay in the S30 and S31 chassis are freaking huge! You can even put in an VG30DETT in there and still have plenty of room.

Well... since I have bought my car, I have done soo much research on this car.. for about a year now....
Common conversions are V8's and L28ET engines.....

I am currently in an L28ET swap right now. (2.8L inline 6... single turbo) from an 1981-1983 280ZX Turbo. The swap is going smooth and a straight bolt on.($300 from junkyard)

As for the SR20DET... um.. NO!
I have seen several swaps completed and they looked freakin awsome, and it makes the weight distrbution 50/50 and the car weighs in at 1,970 pounds! (Well for a 1972 240Z that it)

But.. recently... people have been doing RB26DETT swaps.... which exceed $13,000 for everything installed.

Custom fabricating the engine and tranny mounts.. and crossmember need to be made.. and the Driveshaft needs to be cut and altered.

So.. my 300HP L28ET is fine for me... SR20DET.. sorry.. but you too much work and money for too little. (well hoping to be 300HP)

How do you get 300HP with your L28ET?
Intercooler (since the ZX's did NOT have intercoolers)
Bigger Injectors
Stand Alone Fuel Management from SDS (simple digital systems)
New T3/T4 Garret Turbo
and 3" exhuast
60mm throttle body

PS - I hate this thread

search for Mckinney Motors or Motor sports.
They have a kit out for a SR20DET to drop in and bolt into a old Datsun. It was one of my ideas for my 'fast car' I was thinking of doing.
Forgot the actual website though. They also have kits for S13's and S14's for RB motors.

Just saying , it would be less work, and as for me , the only Z's worth owning is the 240Z ....260's and 280's are crap and certanly not "Historic" in my opinion and that makes the Small Block the perfect swap for them !!

Why don't you have some fu*king respect for some peoples cars on this forum!

240Z's are great cars yes... but the history in them... is not everything for the Zcars!

240Z's from 1970-1973 are great cars.. but they had 4 speed transmissions, dual carbs, are lightweight.. but safety sucks ass.

280Z's however are powered by a much stronger and larger engine by .4L more and have Fuel Injection which is by far more superior to Carbs. Also the 280Z had much more features inside and out of the car, and has much safer sidebeams along the the body and stronger doors.

If you were to get into an accident.... in a 240Z say bye to your car and your life...

the 280Z however will safe your life.

The 280z has a far better steering system.. suspension.. 5 speed transmission.. much better air conditioning.. EFI and not carbs... you can turbo them unlike the sh*tty carbs.. which people attempt to turbo which sucks up alot of as and can't provide alot of boost (PSI).
