The answer is four simple words: Ramp Angle and Enertia.
The steeper the ramp angle at a given resistance the greater the likelihood a valvetrain component will separate from its connecting piece(s).
The real difficult part is that a manufacturer may alter the ramp angle at the top or bottom of the roll, so there may be two ramp angles on any one profile. Float can result from deflection or enertia, either at the top of the lift.
So unless you can find the ramp angles of attack or ramp angles of incidence you are gonna have to take the manufacturers word on what needs upgraded springs.

does anyone know the answer to the above stated question. because i am interested to find out if the stage 2 cams from zex(in. 268 duration + 11.43 lift and ex. 278 duration + 11.53 lift) really need a valve spring upgrade. any help would greatly be appreciated. TIA...
p.s. i know the list says that it can be used with stock valve train but, i went to nipponpower.com and the website reccomends a valve spring upgrade just want to be sure before spending any money on a product.
Rico, I'm considering the same cams. I think Comp Cams went a little overboard on the exhaust cam specs (probably because Zex is selling them and they want to push nitrous use). I was thinking the intake cam will be fine but exhaust cam scares me with stock valvetrain.
I've been compiling a list of all the different cam grinds I've wandered across, with part numbers and prices if I could find them for sale (not that that is a a garuntee you can actually buy them, lol). Some of this I got from the manufacturers' websites, a couple from bugging places that sell 'em, and a couple from various other sources. I know there are other grinds out there, but if they're not listed I havn't had any luck on getting specs. If you spot an error (or twenty) or know of others, post it up and I'll add it to the list. I know I'm missing some of the stock grinds.

I'll be getting the Zex stage 2 cams in a week or two. I'm getting them for $387. Do you guys think I will have to change the springs?
you should be o.k. with your stock valve springs, i think if a person runs a stage 3 kit and up (like my stage 4's that i still have to install) you would have to upgrade the springs.
I saw the stage 2's for $370 at Racenet Performance. Most of the sites that sell them say valve springs are recommended for stage 2 but not required but the Comp Cams site says "needs aftermarket springs" for every grind except 58100??
