Help with front strut install

I have new KYB struts with the new boots and rubber seals. The problem im having is tightening the bolt on the very top of the strut mount without the strut piston rotating. How do you keep the piston from moving while you torque the bolt? Also do you need a spring compressor to install or just to take the spring off the old strut?

To keep the center stud from moving use a vise grip, or something similar to hold it still. You'll also probably need a drop wrench to get to the top bolt while you hold the stud still (Having a second person would be a great help.

To my knowledge you spring compressors are not required when installing your springs (Just when removing them).

DON'T USE VISE GRIPS (OR ANYTHING FOR THAT MATTER) ON THE PISTON SHAFT!!!

It will damage the seal.

That being said, you could probably get away with using them at the very top of the shaft...hope this didn't come too late.

laterz...Jody

When you have the strut assembly and spring mounted is the piston supposed to be dead center in the middle of the spring or does it go to side a little?
