Can't Tighten Clutch Cable Any More

I did my requisite search on this forum before I decided to post this.

I just had my clutch replaced last week and my clutch cable was replaced about 6 months ago. I believe that the old clutch stretched the cable. Now, with the new clutch, it is catching really low to the floor. There is no more room to tighten the cable since the locknut on the clutch cable can not go any further. Is there any way for me to tighten the cable just another inch or so without replacing my clutch cable? I want to get rid of the freeplay on the clutch pedal and in return, the clutch should catch higher up off the floor.

I read about using washers somewhere, but if the locknut is in the way, then the washers will have no room to take up the slack in the cable. Can I remove the locknut? Is that safe? The locknut is front of the thumbwheel on the cable near the clutch lever.

What do you think? Or is it simpler just to replace the clutch cable? Thank you so much.

You can drill the clutch cable bracket and make the holes longer so that you can move the bracket towards the firewall. Im pretty sure this is a MUST if you have an ACT clutch, Coach has posted how to do this and pictures. Search for like ACT clutch fix or something

You can move the locknut to right behind the thumb nut and use washers to shim the cable. Thats what I did nad it works great.

To make the clutch grab higher, don't you make the cable looser?

Yea, the tighter the cable, the higher the catch point of the pedal off the floor. The looser the cable (my problem) the closer to the floor the catch point is. I'll give it a few weeks since it was a brand new clutch (OEM Key Value Clutch Kit) and see if it breaks in and if I notice a difference in the catch point. Thanks, all.

yea, i drilled the holes out on the clutch cable arm. I tried the washers and they wanted to wander a bit. This way worked much better for me.

We had to do the same thing on my clutch install. It works like a charm. Can be adjusted either way.

I have a 96 and I shattered the clutch lever too. We got a new one and welded 1/4 inch steel gussets on both the top and the bottom. They usually break as a result of tightening the cable too far. I second OKboy's answer. Go buy a GA16 cable. According to Greg V. at Mossy, they work much better and have more adjustability.

I'm having the same problem with my car. It's a 98 se-r. I just replaced the Throw out bearing and it has a Jim Wolf clutch. It slowly loosens as I drive. So will replacing the cable with a GA16 stop it from adjusting itself? I hope so, this is driving me nuts.

Yeah, I had the same problem when I took out the locking nut to get more adjustment. I ended up welding a 3/4" to 1" spacer onto the clutch cable bracket to move the mounting point away from the arm. This let me put the locking nut back on the end, and it doesn't come unadjusted any more.

It is amazing how long this thread went on. I can post a pic of my drilled out bracket if you want to see it, but drilling two holes seems a lot easier to me. But, as long as you move the bracket point back on the cable, you will have adjustability. This will save your throwout arm from breaking.
