Help diagnose my problem....

Ok, my motor has been acting VERY sluggish the past couple of days. Power loss is very evident, and if just feels like the motor was pinging pretty bad, and ECU was pulling timing.

Well, tonight.....was FUBAR. Was crusing in 5th gear, and decided to downshift. Downshifted to 4th, rpm's are at 4000. Motor doesn't seem to wanna go anywhere. Rev's BARELY increase.

Couple seconds later of full throttle, I hear "POP", and the motor starts knocking LOUD, and shuts off.

I crank it again, and it starts, but dies. Then, crank again, and it'll run if you give it gas.....but it knocks LOUD when you give it gas. I'm talking not like the sound of pinging, like metal on metal knock. I drove the car home, but with a SEVERE loss of power, and had to keep my foot on the gas to keep from stalling. Sounds like I'm running open exhaust manifold it's so loud.

Any thoughts?

My guess is a thrown rod bearing, maybe cracked the piston ringland. This is on a 2001 B15 SR20DE with intake, header, cams, fuel pump, etc etc with 50,000 miles

I don't believe it's the timing chain.

Right now, I'm 99% sure I spun a rod bearing. There was a couple metal shavings in the lower oil pan, along with some silver, metal looking sludge.

That's scarey. I'm sorry to hear about this. Sounds like it's time for a new motor to me.

It could be a lot of things if its cranking over but not starting. But if you heard a loud pop from the engine, it could be that the timing chain broke, it could be bent valves, spun rod bearing, basically something related to the engine itself, which is the same conclusion that you have come to. It's surprising the engine has died out at 50k miles, but if that can happen, then anything can. Pop the valve cover and see what's up. Maybe it could be something minor. Worst thing worst, you can get a JDM engine for dirt cheap. All is not lost.

The motor actually runs, though. It'll stall at idle unless you give it a little gas. Although, there's a LOUD knocking noise....and very little power.

For the car to be into the 12's the motor had to take some abuse. It definately sounds like a rod knocking from your description. If it's that loud I would expect something to come peeking out of the block soon if you keep running it.

Ya, it's rod knock for sure. I'm not running it anymore. Doing a DET swap soon.

Wow Aztek, don't bother letting the engine cool before parting it out I'm pretty sure he got the point after the first post.

I'll probably part the motor out here pretty soon. You'll be the first to get the valve cover. Although, I was thinking about using it on the DET.
