Just put a clutch in for NismoGirl2001.... She brought me the car, the clutch was slipping and making a bad grumbling sound....
I just replaced the clutch with oem nissan stuff (ask her what it was) new pressure plate, TO bearing, and disc... I had the flyhweel resurfaced as well, and did extensive cleaning to the tranny and the block (her valve cover is leaking oil into the tranny and that caused the last clutch to go I think)...
Anyways - the car STILL makes the grumbling sound, in neutral with the clutch out (very light sound, actually went away after the first few minutes), but mostly when in 1/2 and even 3rd gear...
Anyone have any ideas? She has 102k on the car, I wondered if maybe it was a bad wheel bearing or something odd like that? I've never heard of a tranny going bad - but could that be the case?
well chris just stopped over, its leaving puddles of really dark black tranny fluid. he is now thinking maybe input shaft is bad and that explains the odd sounds. it kinda sound like a turbo spooling ,more like when you are spinning gears together but just the very tip is acutally hitting but not catching. it sometimes makes a poping noise and you can tell it catches. he sugguests dropping the tranny and getting it rebuilt if thats the problem

Yep - can anyone confirm, when I tore the tranny apart there was for sure dark fluid in all over it, the block, and the pp/clutch disk, I cleaned it all up and assumed it was from a valve cover leak that looked pretty bad, however when amy got home she got a puddle (which stops once the car sits) that is leaking from between the block/tranny - it has the smell of tranny fluid but is dark I'm assuming from the clutch dust....
So - when an input shaft goes do this happen? I know nothing about tearing apart a 5spd...
Chris

here are some pics to help describe where its leaking from. I ran through the gears while it was up on the jack stands and it didn't leak anymore, but it was only running for maybe a min or so.
This is from underneath the drivers side. The black thing is the crossmember , the bottom half is the engine, top is the tranny
This shows where its leaking and must be blowing to while i was driving. Its from the tranny back to the cat.
Another pic of the leak. Right side is engine, Left is tranny.
i was just now told by someone on the boards that gl-5 can ruin a tranny that calls for gl-4 fluid, even though i was told by the dealership and another source that it was ok. does anyone know the answer to this?
Yes, you are not supposed to use GL-5. Apparently it can cause problems with the synchros (I think something about them being made out of brass?), but this is just what I have heard.
ok well looks like i need to change that now too. That could explain the leaking maybe.
--------------------------------------------- From b15 again
If you buy GL-5 gear oil, and put it in your GL-4 transmission you are not doing your transmission a favor. In some cases the GL-5 gear oil can be "too slippery" and the synchronizers in the transmission will slightly "crunch", as they are not rotating at the same speed. GL-5 also has twice the extreme pressure additives of GL-4, and these additives can corrode certain "yellow" metal synchronizers.
mpg9999 is right about the GL-5 thing, it eats away the tranny. GL-4 is the better weapon of choice. $tealerships dont know squat. I have heard them say worse things than noobs. I trust the forum guys a LOT more than them.
Very interesting... sorry amy I didn't know this, took your dealerships advice....
Also though, you had the crunchy sound before the GL5, it soudns just like a bad throw out bearing, also, we know for a fact you had the same black nasty fluid all over in the tranny...
Not nissan specific but searched on yahoos and apparently there is a seal on that input shaft, but I saw no easy way to get to it... I'm think its past just the seal now though since you have the wierd sound...
Call the dealer up, tell them you used GL5 and what its doing now and see what they say.
Chris
i called AAMCO after I talked to you Chris and the guy said he could look at it tomorrow morning. Also said that they do free estimates and look at it for free. Soo who knows, do you think I shoudl take it. Worse comes to worse it will just have to sit till i can afford to get it rebuilt.
