Need help ASAP, axle wont go in tranny and I need car to get to work :(
To make a long story short. My car has been sitting at Carbonblack200's house for 2 days because we can't get the new axle installed. We can line it up with the splines and slide it in the transmission but there is about 1/4" space that doesn't go in. The only thing I can see that is obstructing it from going in is a bar or something inside the transmission (pinion shaft mate?). Is there some sort of trick to getting that thing to move so the axle will go in the transmission all the way?
TIA

For some reason, new Axle does not want to go all way in. It goes in almost allway, but stops 5mm before it is perfectly flush. Axle is hitting this piece of metal (see pic) inside the transmission, and it is not going in any farther. When I did mine, I didn't have this problem and axle went right in. Is there anyone here had this problem??
I'm pretty sure he got a right axle ('96 G20 5spd w/LSD, ABS).
The pasenger side axles does not matter if it is ABS or not. Only the drivers side axle changes between ABS and non ABS cars.
The problem that you are having is this. If I remember corectly if you get a axle from a automatic car it will not go in all the way. I think the parts guys gave you a automatic axle bu mistake.

yea i had the same problem when i did mine. it would only go in so far and then it would just stop. when we took the new one out and sat it side by side with the old one, the new one was longer. but only by about 1/4"
Wow, the mysterious 1/4" scandal! I think we may have solved another one Watson. That is really odd that nissan would even make two axles that are that close to the same length. Seems like a waste to me when they could make them all the same. ANyway, I say do what Miko and Seryusly said and go swap the axle out.

Yep , it does sound like its just a little to long .. and it does matter on BOTH axles if its ABS or not , non ABS doesnt have the ABS sensor wheel .....But yea, lenght wise they are the same ..

Also when you get the correct one, do the following as a precaution. Take a small triangular file, file down the v-groove at the end of the axle so that you have a nice v-shape in all the grooves. This is the trick my mechanic told me to do. It's a preventive maintenance. It will help to get the axle in easier and make it easier to take it out next time. The one that you get from Autozone is really bad. I needed to file down just about every single one of those grooves.

Yup, the axle was not the right one. We took it back to the place he bought, and compared those axles side by side and measured everything. That new axle was slightly longer than his old one. We also looked at Automatic axle, and that one was way longer than other two. So I was guessing he got the one for "without" LSD. Anyways, we got everything figured out and everything is taken care of. I'll let SR20 Inside finish off this story.
ahaha w00t I am so glad this is taken care of! I ended up having my stock one rebuilt at "CV Axles Express" for $75 with tax which I didn't think was to bad for getting it back in 5 hours so I am back on the road and everything is good so far. The funny thing is that the axle was all green and metal color when we took it out... when I got to CB200's house the shop guy painted it black, had new boots and clamps on everything, and had remachined the housings . Hard part is that we also replaced the damn transmission axle seal and I had to pay for it twice because it is so damn hard to install the thing with no working space up in that area so that ended up being about $20... also lost 2 quarts of mt90 at $11 a bottle, and lost 4 days worth of down time..., and the cost for CB200 to drive me around all over, and have the axle rebuilt. Ended up being quite an expensive little venture.
Lesson learned here is.... IF THE PASSENGER SIDE AXLE IS NOT THE RIGHT LENGTH THEN IT IS THE WRONG ONE!
CARBONBLACK200 GETS SOME ACKNOWLEDGEMENT HERE FOR BEING SO GRACIOUS AS TO DRIVING ME TO SO MANY DAMN PLACES AND HELPING ME OUT WITH THE WHOLE PROJECT. THANKS !
"CV Axles Express" kicks butt. It actually only took them 3 hours to rebuild his axle. It was funny because it came back painted all nice and shiny. Looks like they did the quality work to it. Now I'm thinking about bringing mine in. haha.
After fighting with this little tranny axle seal and got tranny fluid right in my eyes (man it hurt) and all over my face , I became a little creative and made this seal install tool. (Breaker bar with big 32mm socket with old tranny seal attatched to it). This masterpiece worked pretty well and was able to install a new seal nice'n flush.
SR20 Inside, You're very welcome man. You know I love driving. Your car tried to kill me couple times with tranny fluid, but hell, weather was nice (mostly sunny/MT90 shower), and I had a good time.

You are guessing wrong.
The pasenger side axle with or without LSD are the same on the 5speed.
Why dont you ask guys who have changed their 98-99 Non LSD cars to LSD tranny and they will tell you all you have to change is the driverside axle. I have done 5 of these change overs I know. The man gace you an automatic axle.
The Driver side axle is diffrent if the car has LSD. LSD driverside axles are shorter than NON LSD drivers side axles.
Now Pasenger side axles are only diffrent if the car is automatic or stick. Also if the car has ABS or Non ABS but the lenght are the same just the ABS pickup on the end is diffrent.
how did you install that new seal, i have to do the same exact repair in a couple of days and ive never done it before, i think ive read just about all i can.
Any tips you can give out when putting the new axle and seal in on the passenger side?

Carbonblack200 made this tool for us to get the seal in perfectly.. he has a picture of it if you ask him for it. He got the old seal and taped it to a 32mm socket and then had a breaker bar on the socket. I recommend 2 people do this job... one under the car watching seal to see what sides need to go in further and one on the wheel well side to hit the end of the breaker bar with the mallet. You have to be VERY careful with new seal because the rubber breaks really easily on it. Best thing to do if any is to use old seal and place it over the new one and just hit the old seal.... *** tway the new one doesnt get any force on it inthe wrong places. Make sure that you get the seal flush.. it isn't supposed to go in further than being flush but it will want to. Good Luck.
