Car suddenly herky jerky during acceleration! Help!

I got up this morning and my car started up just fine. Then I pulled out of my driveway and as I was shifting into second and accelerating, the car began to jerk around like it would if you weren't used to driving a stick and just dumped the clutch. I also hear a weird "spinning" noise when I try to accelerate. Any ideas?

Does your car vibrate vigorously when your accelarating only? Does it have a smooth ride once you get to about third gear or just ease up on the gas pedal?

If it is, it would most likely be one of your motor mounts went bad. Check them all and make sure they are in tact.

Not sure about the "spinnng" noise you have mentioned. Can you define that a little more. Is it a whinning noise?

Steve

I can't really get out of first gear. When I let off of the clutch, the car bogs so badly and is so herky jerky that I have to depress the clutch again to keep the car from stalling. The whining noise is alot like an over-worked alternator when your running too much extra electrical equipment in the car. Does that make sense?

Could this be a possible scenario? I'm a teacher and a coach so I have my keys on a lanyard (those things that hang around your neck like a gym teacher has). When I jumped in my car to go to school on Wednesdayl my lanyard caught on my turn signal arm and tore it completely off! My lights were on and the only way I can turn them off now is to disconnect the battery. If the battery connection wasn't solid then the whining noise could have been my alternator working overtime right?! And, would a bad battery connection cause the care to run that rough? I tightened everything down this morning on a whim and the car runs flawlessly. I feel really stupid. Any input (other then about the stupid part).

If your alternator is fine, there should be no problem running without a battery as I have ran my car without a battery and it ran real well. But if your alternator is not in good condition, the battery can help stabilize the voltage. But I bet in your case, the ground wires for the alternator was loose so your car wasn't forming a strong electrical circuit causing it to run like how it ran.
