The Definitive Motor Mount Post

(edit) So far these are the questions that need to be clarified for an FAQ. Please refer to a number when answering a question. I will add your responses to this post as we go and eventually tidy it up as much as i can.

1 Why do i need to get new motor mounts?

2 How can i tell if i need new mounts?

3 What is the difference between motor mounts, inserts, torque mounts, and solid mounts?

4 Who makes motor mounts for sr20 cars?

5 What are the differences in construction?
5a In effectiveness?
5b In vibrations?
5c In cost?

6 Where can they be bought?

7 How many mounts are there in total?

8 Should i replace all of my mounts at the same time?
8a Is it ok to only install 1 or 2?
8b What would the benifits be?

9 Are the mounts all one piece or does it vary depending on the manufacturer?

10 Whats this i hear about pouring my own mounts and how do they compare to store bought mounts?

11 Are they difficult to install?

12 Are the mounts different for different years and will this effect installation?

13 Are there any write ups on how to install them?

14 .... (feel free to add questions that i have missed)...

its time to make a collection that includes every piece of information that concerns motor mounts for sr20 equiped cars. Hopefully this will cut down on the number of motor mount questions because the "SEARCH motor mounts" reply is becoming less and less. There is a lot of misinformation and conflicting information that is compiling in our post archives. As you make replies to this thread i will incorporate them into this first thread so that we have all of the information collected in one post and so that people can argue or confirm the information.

The newbies will thank us and it will cut Harris' work in half!

Every piece of information on this topic? Be too damn big to fit in one thread, unwieldy. Are you looking for different types of motor mount upgrades, terminolgy, how to's... what?

There really isn't that much misinformation on this, just people using different mounts and terminology and having different opinions on the difficulty or ease of replacement.

There is a ton of information on motor mounts, for sure, and maybe it takes time to read through it all from a "search". But, guess what? If you want it, you'll put the work into finding it.

I don't speak for anybody else, but I get tired of seeing threads asking the same questions over and over. Makes me think that the person asking is lazy or inept.

JMO, and I'm using "you" as in the generic "you"... not singling you out

Later,
Mark(and, yes, I have upgraded my mounts and will probably do it again in the future)

My concern is not that I put the information together for myself but for others in the future. I know se-r.net has been way helpful in the past to me because they have very definative write ups and comparisons. Searching the forum on the topic of motor mounts gives you too many incomplete, unverified ideas, contradictory material, and not much comparison of different factors when considering which mounts to get and how to install them. I think there would have to be people on here that would agree that a write up on this topic would be way helpful to avoid people having to "see threads asking the same questions over and over."

Yes i have done my searching and I have most of the information collected in my head (even the stuff that contradicts itself). I would post all of it for people to critique but im afraid my signal to noise ratio would be way unhelpful. So i was hoping that people with first heand experience would be able to provide solid information. The large amount of posts on this topic tells me that something should be done... and that something would be this post. Don't feel oblidged to contribute... however, your feed back is very wanted and needed to stop the dumb motor mount posts.

I'm really just trying to help people out here. I think this is something we can do.

Ok, then this needs to have a blue print... be organized. In other words, ask for very specific experiences for each part.

i.e. types of motor mounts, what's hot... what's not and pluses and minuses
terminology: front mount(passenger side) back mount(drivers side) , etc...
problems and solutions to the problems.

Just needs to be broken down, detailed, then discussed... then move on to the next part. Having it all come in a jumble will be nearly as confusing as doing a search.

JMO

Ok, another thing that causes confusion is the names odf the individual mouts.

Front = passenger side near radiator overflow tank.

Rear = drivers side near transmission

left = dogbone mount near radiator

right = mount near firewall

AFAIK there are 7 sources for mounts. Stock OEM, Nismo, Homemade window weld/poured urethane, ES, Place Racing, JWT, and Prothane.

If you have any questions about what's a good deal, or how to install mounts on a classic, PM me. You can purchase an entire poly set for $46 shipped to your door and istall them yourself in less than 3 hours using very simple tools. I have pics to help with the install process.

so very true - most everything I've read on motor mounts is not very helpful. The only criteria, that I have seen posted, for a motor mount to be considered "good", seem to be: low cost, vibration (for some reason, people equate it with power), and the lack of broken parts (evidently, if nothing bad happens post-installation, then the part is a success). The only down-sides discussed are cost and installation.

I think this post is a good idea - why waste time searching, when you can post up certain "incontrovertible truthes" in a single, easily accessable post. Besides, searching hasn't helped me at all trying to find motor mounts that I would want - full, high-durometer rubber mounts, not inserts and not something that's going to shake the dash. Everything is about urethane, insert or full mount, with very little distinction, aside from price, between brands.

hopefully some people will start posting some pertinent first hand experiences and info on this subject - I doubt I'm the only one here interested in learning more about mounts

The information that you can find from a search is "subjective", not incomplete or erroneous. For instance, how much vibration is too much vibration... how hard is it to do, and so on.

More vibration does not equal more power or acceleration, less engine movement does. The less your engine moves(torques) the more power that is being delivered to the wheels and not lost in the motion.
Unfortunately, enabling the engine to quit moving means using stiffer and fuller mounts, which usually translates into vibration to some degree inside the car and behind the wheel. To use anything softer in order to eliminate vibration defeats the purpose...
just buy new stock mounts.

This was the first upgrade I did to my car. I'd never owned a Classic before, never changed out even one motor mount before. I found more than enough information, help and hints to walk me through it. Was it difficult for me, hell yeah. Would I do it again, you betcha.

If you want a softer ride but still want to eliminate engine movement, try using a urethane pour that is softer, from what I understand they do come in different grades.

What's good for me may not be good for you.

Subjectively,
Mark

Just to add a note about inserts. If you are planning on buying the ES inserts for your torque mounts(dogbone, firewall), be careful.
If you still have the original mounts in there and they are still in good condition, replace them anyway. The ES inserts now being made no longer fit
correctly in the old mounts... you have to do some shaving to make them fit.

How do I know? That's what I had to do. I'll do it again in the future, but I'll buy the new mounts first, then another set of inserts. I'm thinking that
the firewall mount would have gone in a lot easier had I done it that way... but, I didn't know until the deed was done.

Mark
