Well my buddy and I are working a B13 DET that has some major cooling probs... The car runs at normal operating temps but after driving for a while it spews coolant and heavy amounts of steam out of the resovoir. At first we thought it was just the head gasket... we replaced, no luck. Then we replaced the the thermostat and both radiator hoses. No luck. So removed the Thermostat completely just to make sure it had nothing to do with blockage... No luck... Replaced the rad. cap with a TT cap.. no luck... The only thing that hasn't been changed out is the water pump... Has anyone experienced this problem at all??? the car runs awesome except for this problem. I need to have it running in week so we can take to a local nissan meet.
How did you bleed the air from the cooling system? I found that I could only get the air out of mine by raising the front of the car as high as I can put it.

Ya, getting all the air out of the system is tricky and crucial.
I took a stock rad.cap, and wedged (bent around) a small nail around the diaphragm on the underneath side of the cap. When bleeding the system you just put the modified cap on the radiator and drive around and get it up to operating temp. Come back and park it, make sure the overflow tank is full. Any air in the system will be displaced by the coolant in the overflow tank and the air is vented thru the modified cap because the diaphragm is wedged open.
One time while doing this, the overflow tank was sucked dry, thus sucking more air in the system and I had to do it again. So, make sure the overflow tank doesn't run dry. Works like a charm.
If it's not air in the system I would look into the water pump.
Actually it stays just below the halfway mark. It doesn't fluctuate at all.. So basically you guys are telling me that if I burp the cooling system we should be pretty good??? I just don't want to do the water pump unless I absolutely have too!
Well, you've had the system apart when you were changing various parts so it's definately a possibility that there could be air in the system that needs to be burped. Also, it's a free test provided you can do it yourself.

Well I did that today following to guide in the FSM... No luck still... It made it better then before but still doing it and creating quite a bit of steam and some over spray... The weird part about it is that it fill the resevoir almost full then completely empties once the car is cooled down again.. I did notice some material floating in the coolant. I might do a complete flush and see what happens... any more opinions?
My DET would over heat in minutes if I was stop'd at a light. I just riged up both fans on the radiator to a switch on my dash, and just turn them on before i go driving. Runs cool, and the coolant hose on the drive side the car is barely warm after driving around. (Because its in the direct flow of the fan I presume...)
