Custom Exhaust Manifold Tubing?

Im in the process of getting some material together for building my own equal length turbo exhaust manifold. Here is the delima. I can use either 1) 1-3/4" Mandrel bent mild steel tubing with a wall thickness of 0.065" (1.620" ID) or 2) some 1-1/2" SCH 40 mild steel weld pipe fittings with a wall thickness of 0.145" (1.610" ID) Which ones would you go with? Im kinda torn, I really dont know what wall thickness to run, any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You may want to go with the thicker wall pipe.

Go with the Schedule 40 piping. I'd just like to say good luck with your project, there is a reason why we ( protech ) and Full Race charge as much as we do for our manifolds, they are not easy to build and take a lot of time and patience. Have fun

i agree with you there.....ive seen what it takes to make one of these manifolds.....hours up on hours of work. Stainless verions of these things are worth EVERY penny that protech charges for them. Im having a cast steel one made for me for around $1000 and for where i am in the world that is a freaking bargain. Keep in mind your collector design (the collector is the most tim consuming bit to make as you have to get the angles right) and runner length. My guess is materials will run you $300-$400, then there is the welder, all the calculations, collector design, finding out where each runner has to enter the collector to use the pulses effectivley....then you need to make it all fit in the engine bay and possibly clear some akward components (AC compressor). Then there is the custom j-pipe

all that being sid if you can pull it off its very self gratifying. will be without your car for at least 2-3weeks.

good luck

Thanks for the input guys, I know this is going to be a tough project, but Im confindent I can pull this off.

Mad props to Mike and the crew at Protech, your manifolds are NICE!! and I do understand why you charge what you do. I am half tempted to get one, but like sirnixalot said, its the self gratification that Im after, Im not building this car for anyone but me.

Since Im building a whole second motor out of the car my fab time is greatly increased
